Jimmy Carter, America's 39th President, has died at the age of 100. He served one term in the Oval Office, from 1976 to 1980 and his achievements include brokering a historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. US Correspondent Ira Spitzer has more.

The Democratic Alliance is laying criminal charges against a FlySafair passenger who allegedly hurled racist slurs at the coloured community during a flight from Durban to Cape Town. A 39-year-old man is expected to appear in the Centane Magistrate's Court, in the Eastern Cape province, for allegedly sodomising an 18-year-old disable initiate. The Special Action Committee for Education is taking the Western Cape Education Department to court today over its plan to cut over 2,400 teaching posts. The Committee is filing an interdict at the Western Cape High Court aimed at restraining the department from implementing these cuts. Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers is set to send additional water tankers to Makana Municipality. The residents of Makana spent the Christmas Day without water as the town continued with water-shedding. Old Age homes are reportedly the most affected places in the town. Some residents of Seshego township in Limpopo say communities need to improve their parental role to curb teenage pregnancies.  Since, Christmas Day, the community attracts attention after a 13-year-old girl from the area, gave birth. The processing of vehicles and pedestrians passing through the Lebombo Border Post in Mpumalanga is continuing despite the intensifying protests action in Mozambique. The N4 toll road in the Mozambican side is among major roads targeted by the protesters. Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa is in the Eastern Cape amidst a devastating initiation season, which has claimed the lives of 27 Initiates. The province has been identified as a hotspot for initiate deaths, prompting the minister's visit to meet with traditional leaders to review strategies to prevent further tragedies. Shack fires in the Western Cape have claimed yet another life. One person has died, in a blaze in the Vrygrond informal settlement near Muizenberg. According to the ward councillor in the Vrygrond area - sixteen structures have been destroyed in the early morning fire. It is the fourth fire incident in the ward this month. On Christmas Eve, a 30- year old man died in Nomzamo in the Strand due to smoke inhalation.

Mozambique is reeling under its worst election-related violence since its civil war ended 32 years ago. A deadly prison riot in Mozambique's capital, Maputo, has left about 33 people dead and 15 others injured, according to the country's police general commander, Bernardino Rafael. Thousands of inmates reportedly escaped from a maximum-security prison in Maputo yesterday.  Authorities have since recaptured 150 prisoners.
