The community of Cata Village in Keiskammahoek in the Eastern Cape says it has been left reeling after an elderly woman was stabbed multiple times and left for dead last Wednesday. She later died as locals waited for authorities. Earlier in the week, two other elderly women were allegedly raped and attacked by intruders in their homes. This comes two months after a 91-year-old woman was killed after she and a 75-year-old friend were attacked in Tsomo.  Sakina Kamwendo spoke to member of the Cata Village community, Sizwe Ndlazulwana

The accused in the murder case of Nosicelo Mtebeni has abandoned his application for bail. The 25 year old will remain in custody. The accused briefly appeared in the East London Magistrate's court after his arrest for the gruesome murder of his alleged girlfriend, last week. Parts of her body were found in a suitcase in Quigney in East London, while the rest of her body was found in the house she shared with the accused. The Road Traffic Management Corporation has warned motorists that the deadline for the renewal of licences which expired between 26 March to 31 December 2020 is fast approaching. The national lockdown imposed on the country last year forced licensing centres to close, resulting in a backlog of expired licences. The Minister of Transport then announced an extension for all learner licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving licences until the end of August this year. Low-cost airline Mango has now appointed Sipho Sono as the business rescue practitioner and said it would soon be back in the air. The airline was finally placed into business rescue, with a high court judge backdating the process to 28 July, effectively immediately protecting it against claims from creditors. The final results of Zambia's presidential election are in and opposition leader, Hakainde Hichileme has emerged victorious after scoring over 2-point-3-million votes. Department of Public Enterprises director-general, Kgathatso Tlhakudi says eight Eskom employees have been suspended following an explosion at the newly completed Medupi Power station. Tlhakudi is briefing the committee on a range of governance and financial challenges relating to state-owned companies. This comes as worker Union NUMSA has cautioned ESKOM to stop what it called, pre-empting the outcome of an investigation on what led to the explosion in Lephalale in Limpopo. The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance says the extent of pollution along the Umhlanga River is still unkown. The public is warned not to fish or collect any dead fish along the beaches north of the Umgeni River following a chemical spill in KwaZulu-Natal. The United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) chemical plant was set alight on 12 July during the public violence. The alliance is demanding the chemical company to reveal what chemicals spilled into the nearby Ohlanga River and the Umhlanga Lagoon. The Alliance's Coordinator Desmond D'Sa tells Sakina Kamwendo that government has failed to send mobile clinics to the area to help people suffering from respiratory and other ailments. 

Eskom has announced that Unit 4 at the Medupi powerstation in Lephalale, Limpopo exploded last night.  The power utility says no injuries have been reported and all employees at the plant have been accounted for, however emergency services have attended to seven employees for shock. In a statement, Eskom says Unit 4 has been on a short term outage when the incident occurred and all the work on the unit has been suspended with immediate effect. Zimbabwean police say they are investigating the circumstances arround the death of a 14-year-old girl who lost her life while giving birth at a church shrine in  Marange, east of the country. Activists have accused government of turning a blind eye to the alleged child abuse practiced in the country's Apostolic Church, which the late Memory Machaya belonged to. It is alleged church leaders forced Memory to give birth in the shrine last month, despite having complications during her pregnancy. Her family was reportedly denied access to the girl during the birth and were not allowed at her burial.
