Operations have been disrupted in the Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. This is because the South African Municipal Workers Union has embarked on a protest over what it referred to as outstanding labour issues in the municipality since 2011. Workers are picketing outside the municipal offices while the police are monitoring the situation. We spoke to SAMWU's regional secretary Nomathamsanqa Banda who says no services will be rendered in the municipality until their demands are met.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has fired Dr. Bandile Masuku from his position as Health MEC following allegations of corruption. Presidential spokesperson, Khusela Diko, health MEC Bandile Masuku and his wife - Johannesburg MMC, Loyiso Masuku - were placed on leave in July following a controversial multi-million rand PPE tender scandal. Meanwhile The State Capture Commission evidence leader, Advocate Paul Pretorius says there are compelling reasons for former President Jacob Zuma to appear before the Commission. The Commission is hearing an application by its legal team for an order authorizing the Secretary of the Commission to issue a summons for Zuma. Earlier Zuma said his appearance before the Commission set for next month will be an incovience. He has also called for its Chairperson Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to recuse himself citing he is bias. But Pretorius says it is not unusual to issue summons to a witness. He says many people have been summoned and that over 30 witnesses have also implicated Zuma.

The Special Investigations Unit says it has referred four criminal matters to the NPA with regard to the procurement of a border fence by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure at the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. SIU Head Advocate, Andy Mothibi says this is with regard to two department officials, as well as two service providers. DPWI Director General Sam Vukela, Ministerial Advisor Melissa White and 11 other officials, are on suspension pending disciplinary measures. Joseph Mosia reports…

Meanwhile, The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has set the date for the hearing into the Beitbridge Border fence contract to next week Friday. The Special Tribunal, sitting at the Booysens Magistrates Court, wants to freeze the assets of contractors involved in the multi million Rand Beitbridge Border fence contract. This relates to an advance payment of 21 point 8 million rand by the Department of Public Works to two contractors. The contract was for the erection of the 40 km Beitbridge border fence. The former VBS Chief Financial Officer, Phillip Truter, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, 3 year suspended. He appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialized Commercial Crimes Court on charges of corruption, money laundering, fraud, racketeering and theft. He is accused of facilitating the looting of VBS, and receiving R5.8 million. Truter pleaded guilty on various charges linked to the looting at the Mutual Bank and has now turned state witness.

ANC has denied media reports that a warrant of arrest has been issued out for its Secretary General, Ace Magashule. Last night media was abuzz with reports that the party's secretary general will be served with an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in the Vrede Dairy Farm corruption matter. SASSA says it has plans to reduce SRD Grant rejection rates. SASSA says it has experienced a rise in the number of rejection rates for the COVID-19 grant applications. This can be attributed to several factors such a mismatch between details provided by beneficiaries and reliance on the information derived from data sets obtained from institutions such as UIF and SARS databases among others. In August there was a significant increase in the number of rejections, as SASSA implemented an additional step of means testing applications against banks. However SASSA tonot sue the means test through the banks as a criteria to determine eligibility. This will affect the approximately 1,9 million people who have been receiving the grant to date, but who were declined in August.We spoke to Paseka Letsatsi- SASSA's spokesperson.

The Hawks have arrested several officials and businessmen in Gauteng, Free State and Kwazulu-Natal - following evidence at the State Capture Commission relating to the 2014 Free State Asbestos Project. More arrests are expected in various parts of the province today.
