November 13, 2018The High Court in Pretoria rules that the Reserve Bank can liquidate the assets of VBS Mutual BankThe High Court in Pretoria has ruled that the Reserve Bank can liquidate the assets of VBS Mutual Bank. The bank had made the application last month saying there is no hope of saving the bank following massive looting and fraud amounting to 1.2 billion rand. "The Great Bank Heist" report by advocate Terry Motau also recommended that the bank's operations be wound down. It lists 53 people as having received money from the bank under questionable circumstances. November 12, 2018Vlakfontein suspects to be detained at different prisons following threatsThe two suspects facing charges of murdering seven family members in Valkfontein south of Johannesburg last month, will be detained at different facilities after one of them 27-year old Ernest Mabaso alleged that his co-accused 61-year old Fifita Khupe, was threatening him. They pair appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates Court earlier today and their case has been postponed to next Tuesday. Mabaso has also been charged with three counts of rape. November 12, 2018Mpontsheng Secondary School principal facing suspensionThe Gauteng Education Department is considering suspending the school principal of the Mpontsheng Secondary School in Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, following allegations that he gave an answer sheet to learners who were writing the Geography 1 exam paper recently. The alarm was raised by a concerned parents who reported the matter to exam quality body Umalusi. The Department of Basic Education says the principal has been removed as chief invigilator and that the provincial department may suspend him while the probe takes place. They now want to be employed directly by the City of Cape Town. The workers have been on strike for four weeks now over this demand. Two MyCiti buses were set alight this week, one in Milnerton and another in Khayelitsha. Last month, another bus was stoned and petrol bombed, also in Khayelitsha.
