The shutdown at the Gupta linked Optimum Coal Mine in Mpumalanga is continuing on Friday because on non-payment of salaries to some mine workers. The National Union of Mine Workers says the mine only paid salaries to permanent employees while the contractors have not been paid, allegedly for three months now. The Right2Know Campaign is marching to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein on Friday morning, to challenge apartheid-era Intimidation Act. The non-profit advocacy organisation says it is doing this in solidarity with two cases of activists, General Alfred Moyo and former Marikana Women's Group leader Primrose Sonti, who is now a Member of Parliament. President Cyril Ramaphosa is now expected to initiate the process of re-establishing the SADC Tribunal after the Pretoria High Court on Thursday declared that former president Jacob Zuma's participation in the suspension of the Tribunal in 2012 was unlawful, irrational and unconstitutional. The Tribunal was set up in 2005 as a judicial body to resolve disputes between Southern African states as well as between states and their citizens. In 2011 SADC leaders - including former president Zuma, suspended the tribunal and later removed the court's jurisdiction for individuals in 2014. Police Minister Bheki Cele says human trafficking needs the co-operation of a bigger crime prevention cluster and home affairs to nip it in the bud. The Constitutional court has reserved judgement in a case brought forward by Freedom Under Law, Corruption and Watch and others against the NPA boss Shaun Abrahams. The parties were seeking a confirmation order to the December 8th judgment by the High Court in Pretoria, which declared the appointment of Abrahams as the National Director of Public Persecutions as well as the removal of his predecessor Mxolisi Nxasana as unlawful. The newly appointed Police Minister Bheki Cele has warned members of parliament to be careful not to encourage a situation where the people are armed with guns as an excuse of fighting crime and self protection. Making his maiden speech in the National Assembly, Cele was responding to calls by some members of the House for the government to arm citizens in the wake of the spate of the shootings and killings of police officers at Engcobo in the Eastern Cape. Cele made references of the recent similar incidents in the United States of America where ordinary citezens had shot indiscriminately while carrying privately owned firearms.
