Former cabinet minister Ronnie Kasrils has rubbished police claims at the Ahmed Timol inquiry in Pretoria that the then banned ANC and SACP encouraged members to commit suicide if they were captured and tortured by apartheid police. Kasrils also dismissed as a fake the INKULULEKO -FREEDOM document produced by apartheid security police as evidence that liberation movements encouraged members to commit suicide if cornered. A Johannesburg businessman who saw a body falling from the notorious John Vorster Square Muhammad Ali Thokan's evidence also contradicted the police version. Neo Makwiting reports.

The family of Dumisani Masilela says they are struggling to come to terms with his death. 29 year old Masilela was admitted to hospital on Wednesday night after he was shot during what police believe to be an attempted hijacking in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg. Police in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed that another woman has been gunned down at the notorious Glebelands hostel in Umlazi south of Durban. Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the 30 year old woman was shot dead at the hostel last night. He says the victim was shot when unknown suspects entered her room and shot her. The South African Policing Union has threatened to intensify their strike action, which resumed yesterday, following failed attempts to end their dispute with SAPS management. 10 111 operators have indicated that they have sought intervention from government and that effort yielded no results.
