Cape Town's streets are buzzing with music, colour and festivity today as thousands of minstrel's parade through Green Point for the annual Kaapse Klopse carnival.  This proud display of Cape Coloured cultural heritage features rhythmic beats and traditional songs. The event, organised by the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association, proceeds following a recent court dispute between the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association and the City over the withdrawal of provisional approval for Vygieskraal Stadium in late 2025. Air Traffic and Navigation Services says flight operations at OR Tambo International Airport have stabilised and are running normally. This follows delays and diversions experienced yesterday (on Sunday) as thousands of travellers returned from the festive break. ATNS has clarified that disruptions were caused by a combination of severe thunderstorms and temporary staff shortages at air traffic control, after some employees failed to report for duty. High traffic volumes are expected on all major routes in the country this weekend as the festive season holidays come to an end. Law enforcement officers are maintaining a high levels of visibility and motorists are advised to plan their trips carefully. Drivers are urged to take sufficient breaks to avoid fatigue. A 19-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with raping and impregnating two minors is this morning expected to make his first  appearance in the Lephalale Magistrate's Court in Limpopo. Police say the minors, aged 14 and 15, from Marapong township, were found to be pregnant after undergoing medical examinations at a hospital. Initiation is a time honoured African custom where a boy enters initiation school to be taught endurance and the basic societal roles a man is to play, however, it is also a time of worry for many because of the health risks involved with this rite of passage to manhood. Already the death toll for the current initiation season stands at 41 according to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). Why is it, that virtually every year teenage boys die or are mutilated during the initiation. To discuss this matter further, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to the minister of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosi Hlabisa. 

WaterCAN, the civil society movement, says it notes Johannesburg Water's latest update following a warning to residents in parts of the CBD and Bezuidenhout Valley not to drink tap water amid possible contamination. The group says the problem appears localised, with no reason for citywide panic. However, it stresses the need for urgent transparency, calling on Joburg Water to release test results without delay. WaterCAN adds that the incident highlights why municipalities must publish water quality data and support citizen scientists to protect public health. There seems to be an outbreak of diarrhea disease around Polokwane. Some residents in Polokwane, Limpopo, are reportedly suffering from gastro-intestinal infections. The residents say they are experiencing diarrhea, stomach pain and fever among other symptoms. They say they have been consulting clinics, hospitals and surgeries as well as buying medication over the counter at pharmacies since November last year. The search for two bathers who are believed to have been swept out to sea while swimming at Main Beach Pennington on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast has resumed. The second body of a group of five swimmers has been recovered. Five swimmers were washed out to sea on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, yesterday. Meanwhile, rescuers and medical personnel have been called out to Thompson's Bay on the north coast this morning, after reports of a swimmer in distress. KZN police have confirmed that four members of a family were killed in Port Shepstone on the province's south coast. The shooting allegedly occurred during New Year celebrations. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Amanda Funani 

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has issued a stern warning to the public not eat white mussels and other shellfish washed up on the West Coast of the Western Cape. A large numbers of dead white mussels, whelks and other shellfish being washed up at St Helena Bay and Elands Bay on the West Coast over the past 48 hours.
