Students will have to wait a little longer to find out whether they will be paying more towards university fees next year. Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has conceded that he was unable to meet yesterday's (Aug 31st) deadline to pronounce on the 2017 fee structure. Earlier this month, various student formations threatened to shut down universities if fees were increased. Growth in credit demand slowed to six-point-seven-eight per cent year-on-year in July, down from a revised seven-point-two-three percent in June. That's according to the latest central bank data. Top management of the Western Cape police say vigilante killings in Khayelitsha (on the Cape Flats) have seen a marked decrease in the past two years. The South African Police Services says it has implemented almost all of the recommendations made by the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry. One of South Africa's biggest asset managers Futuregrowth says it plans to only do business with state-owned enterprises with credible management which is acting in the best interest of the companies they run. Futuregrowth yesterday announced that it will stop lending money to six of the country's largest state-owned companies temporarily. Both the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters have asked the presiding officers of Parliament to investigate the validity of Parliamentary membership of ANC MP Peace Mabe. In the run-up to the August 3rd municipal elections, Mabe was the mayoral candidate of Mogale City in Gauteng. She was also reportedly sworn in as a councillor, but lost the race to become mayor to the DA. Now she has resumed her Parliamentary duties and some opposition parties are questioning her membership. Violence linked to the lack of tuition at Sandi High School outside Ngqeleni in the Eastern Cape has flared up. Homes rented by learners in the village were attacked last night (monday 29 August). A number of classrooms were vandalised or set alight on Monday, apparently out of frustration over inaction by the authorities. The Department of Basic Education says the legislation on schools' conduct will be reviewed to ensure that discriminatory policies are not put in place. This comes after incidents of racism were reported at several schools. Learners at Pretoria High School for Girls staged a protest accusing the school of mistreating pupils with natural black hair or dreadlocks and braids as well as instructing them not to speak in their mother-tongues. Learning at Lawson Brown High School in Port Elizabeth was also disrupted after pupils demanded that the code of conduct regarding hair restrictions be amended.
