The DA has accused ANC members of the Portfolio Committee on Communications of having backtracked on their support of a proposed parliamentary inquiry into the SABC. DA MP Phumzile van Damme says it is clear that ANC MPs were pressured by Luthuli House. She says in so doing, they turned a blind eye to the rapidly degenerating state of affairs at the public broadcaster. Parliament is in full swing this week after two months' adjournment to allow MPS to campaign for the recent municipal elections. The parliamentary committee established to pick the next Public Protector is also expected to nominate the successful candidate from a list of five who have been shortlisted. Lawyers for the Marikana widows and other claimants, say they will now approach the courts to force the office of the President to move swiftly on talks around compensation. The legal team which has filed claims amounting to over a billion rands, wants the matter to be expedited. Last year, the presidency committed itself to compensate the women who lost their husbands during the Marikana shooting in 2012, and mine-workers who were shot and injured. But eight months down the line, the matter is still unresolved. Lucas Mothibedi reports

This comes as people have occupied RDP houses in Nelmapius, near Mamelodi, and others are occupying vacant land near Ga-Rankuwa in the north. People occupying the pieces of land say they do so because they have nowhere to live. More than 200 temporary teachers in Limpopo have not received their salaries since April. The South African Democratic Teachers Union has since threatened to go on strike, should the provincial Department of Education fail to pay the teachers by today (tuesday 23 August). The department says the teachers have not been paid because of an anomaly experienced by the Treasury Department. Shibu Mamokgere reports..

US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned that America may cut aid to South Sudan if fighting in the country does not stop. Kerry announced a $138-million dollar aid package to South Sudan, but said in future financial help to the world's youngest nation would be tied to the leaders' commitment to peace. The United States is currently the world's largest donor to South Sudan contributing $1.6Billion in aid to the country. Speaking in Nairobi, Kerry said South Sudan has agreed to the deployment of a regional protection force to boost security in the troubled nation. Sarah Kimani reports.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Education Department has confirmed that one of the victims of a teacher in Nquthu tried to commit suicide at the weekend. The teacher is on the run after a series of videos surfaced of him allegedly committing sexual acts with a number of learners from the Ekucabangeni High School. The teacher allegedly manipulated learners over several years, influencing them into having sexual relations with him.
