Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande says his department is to consider a proposal to regulate tertiary education fees. He was speaking on the sidelines of the Higher Education Transformation Summit in Durban. The recent ANC National General Council tasked the department with developing a regulatory framework to curb massive increases of fees at tertiary institutions. More police have been deployed at Vrygrond near Cape Town due to the on going taxi violence. A local community centre was also set alight. Chris Mabuya reports

The four children of a taxi driver who died in a bridge collapse in the Sandton area, north of Johannesburg, now face an uncertain future. Twenty-seven year-old Siyabonga Myeni, is one of the two people who died when a pedestrian bridge under construction on the Grayston Drive off-ramp collapsed on Wednesday afternoon. Twenty other people were injured, three of them critically. Both sides of the M1 highway in the area were re-opened to traffic yesterday afternoon after a 24-hour closure. Wisani Makhubele reports

At least two people are confirmed to have died after a temporary scaffolding structure collapsed in Sandton yesterday. The structure was used as a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians over the busy M1 highway. The collapse of the bridge comes as the City of Johannesburg is promoting the Ecomobility World Festival which encouraged motorists to park their cars, cycle, walk and use public transport to get around Sandton.

National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, has been suspended with immediate effect. Her suspension follows recommendations by a Board of Inquiry into allegations of misconduct, her fitness to hold office and her capacity to execute official duties efficiently. Phiyega has been under fire for the police shooting of 34 miners at Marikana in 2012.
