The UK government’s proposal to reform copyright laws to accommodate artificial intelligence companies has sparked significant controversy. The suggested opt-out system allows AI firms to use copyrighted material for training unless creators explicitly request otherwise, raising concerns about undermining intellectual property rights. Critics, including creators and industry leaders, argue that this system unfairly burdens creators while favoring large tech companies. They emphasize the logistical challenges and inefficiencies of opting out, which could result in widespread exploitation of creative works without proper compensation or control. Prominent figures, such as Sir Paul McCartney and Getty Images CEO Craig Peters, warn that the changes could severely harm the UK’s creative industries, which contribute over £126 billion annually to the economy. Opponents are calling for alternative approaches, such as requiring explicit licensing, to protect creators’ rights and uphold international copyright standards.

Meanwhile, workers at Acrylicos Vallejo, a leading Spanish paint manufacturer, have gone on strike, demanding higher wages, improved safety conditions, and better protocols for handling workplace harassment. The strike reflects broader labor unrest, as employees voice frustration over stagnant wages and deteriorating working conditions following the company’s acquisition by private equity firm Proa Capital. Workers report unsafe factory conditions, outdated equipment, and insufficient amenities, such as showers, despite working with hazardous materials. They also cite issues with workplace harassment and stress caused by authoritarian management practices. The union, CGT, accuses the company of neglecting both workers’ rights and safety, escalating the protest to a complete shutdown. While public support for the strike grows, Vallejo has yet to address the workers’ demands, leaving the future of the labor dispute uncertain.

Wyrmwood, the gaming furniture and accessory company, recently laid off nearly 50% of its workforce, reducing staff from 170 to 90 employees due to declining sales and order backlogs. CEO Doug Costello addressed the situation in a speech, stating that annual revenue dropped from $30 million during the pandemic to $15 million currently, while their once lengthy order backlog dwindled to just two weeks. Costello admitted his strategy for improving service to boost sales had failed, prompting the drastic cuts. The company, known for its Wyrmwood Modular Table and Kickstarter campaigns, has faced criticism for posting the speech online, eliciting sympathy for affected employees and backlash against Costello.

Modiphius Entertainment has launched Doomsong, a dark fantasy tabletop RPG set in a medieval world on the brink of a Biblical apocalypse. While specific attendance numbers weren’t disclosed, experts estimate that its turnout exceeds the 17,706 reported by Origins Game Fair by 50-100%. With nearly 400 exhibitors, compared to Origins’ 326, PAX Unplugged provides a robust showcase for board and card games, often serving as an alternative to the oversaturated Gen Con.

Games Workshop has taken a bold step by granting Amazon exclusive rights to adapt Warhammer 40,000 into film and TV. This move has fans both excited and wary, given the mixed history of geek franchises transitioning to mainstream media. Sony is reportedly in talks to acquire Kadokawa, a Japanese media conglomerate with interests in publishing, anime, gaming, and more. If successful, this deal could have far-reaching implications, particularly in the tabletop gaming and anime industries. Kadokawa owns FromSoftware, the acclaimed studio behind Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Bloodborne, but its portfolio extends far beyond gaming. Kadokawa also publishes light novels, manga, and anime, with ties to international distributors. The deal might provide Kadokawa’s tabletop sector—bolstered by its recent acquisition of Arclight, a prominent Japanese tabletop company—with stronger global opportunities. Sony’s potential purchase of Kadokawa has sparked concerns about a monopoly in the anime industry. 

Thomas Elliott, a former Games Workshop artist known for his work on Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar, is developing Eskaton, an original grimdark science fiction setting. After five years at Games Workshop, Elliott transitioned to freelance work in 2023 to focus on this passion project, a decade in the making. Eskaton explores a universe where space travel is fragmented, technology has stagnated, and human colonies evolve in isolation. The setting’s rich narrative includes dystopian worlds, such as Neo-plasia, where massive mining facilities and totalitarian regimes dominate.Key elements of Eskaton include the Agori—towering cyborg warriors—and a dark, expansive sandbox for storytelling. Elliott plans to release Eskaton as a series of art books and miniatures, starting with Neo-plasia, while collaborating on a skirmish game. Inspired by the success of indie wargames like Trench Crusade, Elliott hopes Eskaton will offer a fresh take on grimdark aesthetics, providing an alternative to well-worn franchises. 

Household Volume II expands the imaginative universe of the ENNIE-nominated RPG, delving deeper into the lore, settings, and characters of the Littlings’ adventures. Players explore new areas, including the Garden’s Front Yard and Backyard, filled with mythical locations like the Fountain of Quillwaters and Bramble Town. New playable Folk, including Gnomes, Shinigami, and Fae, join the existing roster alongside new animal companions like moths and frogs. The book introduces fresh mechanics tied to seasonal changes, colossal opponents, and a new Profession, the Wayfarer, which brings unique vocations like Traveling Artist and Settler. Elf Creek Games, a board game publisher known for titles like Atlantis Rising and Honey Buzz, faces backlash from Kickstarter backers due to prolonged delays in delivering crowdfunded projects and a lack of updates since August 30, 2024. The company has four overdue campaigns, including expansions for existing games and a new title, Paradox Initiative. Some backers, particularly in North America and Europe, have received partial deliveries, but others, including international supporters, are still waiting years past original timelines. Notably, the designer of Honey Buzz left the company in October but has tried to provide independent updates. Corvus Belli announced a delay of the new N5 Infinity ruleset release until December 2024, initially slated for November. The update was communicated via social media platforms, leaving fans disappointed but hopeful that the issue would soon be resolved. Pre-orders for “Operation Sandtrap,” a related set including starter forces and a play mat, continue to be available.

Concerns loom over potential tariffs proposed by the incoming Trump administration, which could severely impact the tabletop gaming industry. Experts fear tariffs on non-US goods (20%) and particularly harsh tariffs on Chinese imports (60-100%) would significantly raise production costs, potentially leading to increased prices, financial strain, and possible closures of game retailers and manufacturers. While some companies are preparing contingency plans, there remains hope that these tariffs may not be implemented or could be mitigated through industry adaptation and resilience.

“Stay Frosty REMASTERED” is a revamped old-school sci-fi tabletop RPG where players embody future marines facing off against cosmic threats, reminiscent of classic military sci-fi movies and games. Built upon Black Hack TTRPG rules, it offers strategic, dice-driven gameplay with four core attributes, eight unique classes, and mechanics for rank, supply management, and escalating tension during missions. This edition introduces new content, including two starter adventures, enhanced artwork, campaign-ready rules, and exclusive merchandise. Players explore, battle foes, and tackle point-crawls with themes of horror and action. Written by Casey Garske, with contributions from talented artists, it delivers immersive, long-term gameplay experiences.

The first official expansion for the popular RPG Blades in the Dark, titled Deep Cuts, has been released by creator John Harper. It expands the game with new factions, mechanics, and background options. Divided into two parts, it introduces 27 factions, over 100 heritage and background packages, and 13 new technological innovations. It also includes six modular rules systems that overhaul core mechanics, such as Harm & Trauma, Advancement, and the introduction of a new Threat Roll system, altering how conflict and success are handled. This expansion, described as a blend of refined mechanics and enriched lore, aims to deepen player immersion and campaign longevity.

Free League Publishing announced Black Powder and Brimstone RPG, a new RPG compatible with Mork Borg, which will hit retail on March 18, 2024. In Black Powder and Brimstone RPG, players take on the roles of desperate adventurers stuck in the middle of the conflict that trying to survive it and possibly make a profit.  This standalone RPG is laden with gunpowder and witchcraft, and offers players an action-packed, rules light gothic horror swashbuckling experience.  Players will be able to wield powerful weapons and magic that warp reality.  The book also includes plenty of character options, items, locations, adventures, and enemies to encounter.

Trench Crusade is a new, dark sci-fi miniatures game that brings a unique spin to the wargaming genre, designed by former Diablo concept artist Mike Franchina and Mordheim co-creator Tuomas Pirinen. “Lone Wolf – Adventures in Magnamund” is an upcoming tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) set in the world of Magnamund, utilizing the Dragonbane system by Free League. The original Lone Wolf series, a popular line of gamebooks from the 1980s, allowed players to engage in role-playing elements with a combat system, skills, and equipment. This new TTRPG will expand on the original by introducing various professions, heroic abilities, new monsters, and schools of magic, making it a rich experience for players. The game’s Kickstarter campaign aims to release two 256-page sourcebooks: one focusing on gameplay elements and another featuring a full campaign set in Magnamund. The original Lone Wolf series was a collection of 28 gamebooks where players acted as Lone Wolf, a Kai Lord seeking to defeat the Darklords who attacked his monastery. The books combined Choose Your Own Adventure mechanics with RPG features like inventory management and combat. They stood out by offering choices dependent on in-game abilities, adding a layer of complexity. Though out of print, digital versions of the books are available through fan projects like Project Aon, and an augmented reality version of the game was recently released in a limited capacity.

Wizards of the Coast has ordered a large print run for the new Player’s Handbook (2024) to meet high demand. According to Jess Lanzillo, Wizards’ VP of franchise and product, the English version of the book sold more in its first month than the 2014 edition did across all languages in two years. A second printing is already in the works due to the unexpectedly high demand. Despite some quality concerns from 2023, the initial run has filled shelves across the U.S., though big retailers like Walmart and Target won’t get stock until later this year or 2025. Localized versions of the Player’s Handbook are also in production. Wizards of the Coast is working to ensure the distribution of its core rulebooks, with the Dungeon Master’s Guide (2024) set for release later in October. Lanzillo highlighted the importance of keeping up with demand and reducing gaps between restocks. The production team is addressing these challenges with improved press checks. Digital adoption of the new 2024 rules is also on the rise, outpacing the older 2014 rules for character creation. Wizards anticipates a smooth transition to the new rule set, with Dungeon Masters beginning to plan campaigns using the 2024 rules. Looking ahead, the next major Dungeons & Dragons release after the Monster Manual (2025) will be a dragon-themed anthology, similar to past releases like Candlekeep Mysteries. Wizards is also working on making older campaigns compatible with the new rules, especially for high-level monsters, and encouraging third-party content creation. Lanzillo emphasized that Wizards is committed to maintaining continuity with the game’s previous editions, ensuring that long-time fans’ investments in the 5th edition remain relevant.

The Bolt Action Introductory Set, due for release on November 30, 2024, is designed to introduce new players to the popular WWII tabletop wargame. The set includes a Bolt Action Field Manual, miniatures for US Rangers and German Grenadiers, a terrain piece, and essential gaming components. The manual teaches gameplay through six missions that gradually introduce players to the mechanics. While the set is aimed at beginners, it also offers value for returning veterans looking to brush up on the basics.

The Fighting Fantasy series, a solo adventure gamebook franchise created by Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingstone, is set to return to the U.S. for the first time in over 20 years, thanks to a deal with Steve Jackson Games. Fighting Fantasy was another influential series in the 1980s, blending non-linear storytelling with tabletop mechanics. This re-release is scheduled for 2025, bringing the first ten books back to shelves in the U.S. for a new generation of readers and players.

Marvel and DC Comics have lost their joint trademark for the term “super hero” after decades of holding it. Initially, the trademark was obtained in collaboration with Ben Cooper, Inc., a costume maker who had licensed Marvel and DC characters in the 1960s. After a series of legal disputes involving companies like Mego Corporation, Marvel and DC became joint owners of the “super hero” trademark in 1977, solidifying their control over its use across various media. Over the years, both companies aggressively defended this trademark, opposing various businesses that tried to use the term. However, this year, after Marvel and DC failed to respond to legal challenges, a U.S. court invalidated their trademark, allowing other entities like Superbabies to use the term without restriction.

“Darktide: The Card Game,” a new Warhammer 40,000-themed card game coming in 2025. Meanwhile, Mythic Games, a company plagued by crowdfunding controversies involving delays, miscommunication, and unmet promises, has dissolved, marking the end of its turbulent existence in the tabletop gaming industry.

Mythic Games, a tabletop role-playing and board game company, has filed for liquidation due to a series of controversies and financial difficulties. The company, known for its crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter, faced backlash for significant delays in delivering games, poor communication with backers, and unmet promises regarding stretch goals and content quality. Notably, games like Reichbusters: Projekt Vril and Solomon Kane suffered extended delays, while backers of Super Fantasy Brawl and Joan of Arc were disappointed by missing or lower-quality content. Financial mismanagement became a concern as backers speculated that funds from newer campaigns were being used to fulfill older projects, a practice dubbed “Kickstarter juggling.” Rising production costs, shipping challenges, and the global economic climate exacerbated these problems. A lawsuit over the Time of Legends: Joan of Arc campaign and unexpected increases in shipping costs further damaged the company’s reputation.

The indie RPG “Mothership” is back with a new collaborative funding effort on Backerkit, featuring a variety of new projects from different creators.
