Trans rights have taken a battering under President Donald Trump. But with the calling of the US election result for President-elect Joe Biden, expectations for improvements in LGBTI rights are high. That drive for change may be made a little easier with the election of the first transgender state senator in the US – Sarah McBride. Sarah won her race in the small US state of Delaware.
Senator-elect Sarah McBride is no stranger to advocacy, having served as the National Press Secretary for activist group, the Human Rights Campaign. She is an activist who came out as a Transgender woman while President of her university’s student body. She has worked inside politics, including as a White House intern during Barack Obama’s term, and continues to drive change for LGBTI Americans. She came into the JOY studios on a visit to Melbourne before she began her successful campaign.
