  • John Isaac (Part 1 of 2) UN Photojournalist

John Isaac is an American immigration legend of the highest level. Originally from India, John came here in the late 1960's hoping to become a folk singer like some of his heroes, namely Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. He brought his guitar and became a street busker in New York City's Greenwich Village. A member of the United Nations choir heard his baritone voice and asked him to audition over at their midtown headquarters. He agreed and asked, "Can you help me get a job there, I'm here on a temporary travel visa?" The UN staff member and eventual colleague agreed to help. John was able to secure an entry level position as a messenger. His interest in photography began two years later but not before appearing as a yodeler on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour in 1970. It's all here, his story of laughter and tears throughout the years. In part one of two, we witness the maturing of a young idealistic man to become perhaps the greatest photojournalist of our time.

John's world-wide journey introduces him to the likes of Mother Teresa, Audrey Hepburn, Michael Jackson and many others. Their friendship and influence is evident in the way he speaks of their memories together. Always, the student and teacher, John Isaac studied darkroom techniques with Ansel Adams and is willing to share everything he's learned with anyone who wants to listen. For a budding photographer, this radio broadcast and podcast is a vault of valuable information, almost like a webinar on steroids. Not only does he speak of composition and framing techniques but he talks about the responsibility of maintaining dignity with the subject matter.

Mr. Isaac's transition from war and UN photojournalist to wildlife photo naturalist is a story that was just waiting to be told in long format. So, now sit back, relax and let "The World of John Isaac" (Part One) begin...
