Millions of Lebanese have been protesting daily for more than a week against corruption, lack of opportunity and an archaic system that has ruled the country for more than 50 years. The protests have spilled outside the country into many cities worldwide and the intensity has not abated.

Journalist Khalil Hachem discussed the protests with activists Sara Haidar from Paris, Mohamad Mahfouz from Geneva and Zohair Abed Hak from Dearborn. Where do we go from here and would the protests result in any change to a system that was found on a sectarian formula?

The discussion centered on the reasons for the protests and how millions of Lebanese have transcended all political, social and religious boundaries to come together and demand reform. Will the masses succeed against the entrenched political elite, changing the sectarian system, or will the government bosses survive the unrest?

يعيش أطفال سوريا بصفة عامة والأيتام منهم بصورة خاصة، ظروفًا صعبة للغاية، منهم من راح ضحية الحرب المشتعلة منذ العام 2011

لا توجد إحصاءات دقيقة بعدد الأيتام في سوريا بصفة عامة، لكن التقديرات المختلفة تشير إلى وجود قرابة المليون طفل يتيم في سوريا، فمع بداية العام 2018 قدّرت منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة "يونيسف" عدد الأطفال السوريين الذين فقدوا أحد والديهم أو كليهما بنحو مليون طفل "90 في المئة منهم غير مكفولين

ووصفت المنظمة ذلك بكونه "كارثة بكل المعاني"، بخاصة أنه "كان عدد سكان سوريا قبل الحرب نحو 24 مليوناً، ثلثهم من الأطفال، ما يعني أن نحو 10 في المئة من أطفال سوريا أيتام أحد الوالدين أو كلاهما بسبب الحرب". وتشير التقديرات إلى وجود أكثر من 800 ألف طفل يتيم، ممن فقدوا الوالدين أو أحدهما، يتركز غالبيتهم شمال البلاد، في المخيمات داخل الأراضي التركية، أو على الحدود قريباً منها ، أو في الداخل شمال سوريا

Dr. Sahar Khamis engaged in a lively conversation with her guest distinguished journalist and academic Prof. Lawrence Pintak about his long journey covering the Middle East region and writing about it for over 40 years, which culminated in his most recent book: America & Islam: Soundbites, Suicide Bombs and the Road to Donald Trump. The conversation will tackle how and why he developed an interest in covering this region, both as a journalist and as an academic, his previous books, his current projects, and his future plans, with a special focus on the most important highlights from this new and timely book.

Lawrence Pintak is the author of America & Islam: Soundbites, Suicide Bombs and the Road to Donald Trump (Bloomsbury/I.B. Tauris, June 2019) and five other books on the intersection of media, perception and U.S. policy toward the Muslim world. A former CBS News Middle East correspondent, Pintak was the founding dean of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University (2009-2016) and previously served as director of the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism at The American University in Cairo. He is currently a non-resident senior scholar at the Middle East Institute and holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies.
