USP8 - 360 Video: A New World of Storytelling with Taylor Stakes

Listen Later

Today’s conversation is all about 360 video! We’re going to talk about what exactly this thing it is, how it’s currently being used in higher education and some of the pros and cons of incorporating 360 video into your currently media toolkit. As with any new technology, I absolutely get excited about all the new gadgets, the promise of making higher quality content and dreaming of all the marketing and communications possibilities that could soon become reality. This is all awesome stuff and I invite you to get excited too. But, I also believe with anything new and shiny, we should approach it with a critical eye and ask the tough questions of how exactly this is going to improve our universities and better serve our students, faculty, staff, our alums, our donors and the list goes on. I believe that with the right strategy, 360 video has tremendous potential for higher education, but, as you listen to this conversation, use your own intuition and judgement to see if this might be right for you and your goals.

Joining me today is Taylor Stakes, the video and web multimedia content producer for Trinity University in San Antonio Texas. Taylor oversees all video production, editing, sound mixing, and motion graphics for the office, and assists with the Tiger Network. He has been working behind the camera since he was in high school and holds a bachelor's degree from University of Texas at San Antonio and a master’s in communication arts from The University of the Incarnate Word.

This podcast is brought to you by RateFrame, a new online platform that lets you highlight, playback and share your favorite moments of online videos. Just like you'd highlight an important sentence in a book, now you can highlight the best parts of an online video. Faculty use RateFrame to curate the most important moments from youtube videos, save them in a personal library, and cue them up as needed to present in class, saving valuable in-class teaching time that can be used for much more important activities. Students use the RateFrame platform to build “cliff notes” of the most useful parts of tutorial videos help them study for a test.

RateFrame brings the best moments of online educational videos into the classroom. You can sign up for free at www.rateframe.com/usp and get started highlighting your favorite parts of videos today.
