This Sunday, we begin to explore our individual and communal stories and journeys. What gets in the way of our stories integrating and connecting? In this service, we invite a tender-hold of what we wrestle with, of the ways in which we've been hurt in religious/spiritual communities. Being in a space where we wrestle with a both/and is OK and part of allowing transition to happen.

Soils tell the stories of a place, bearing remnants of past actions of its inhabitants. From soils, we can learn of the past’s weather from year to year or glean how healthy the microbiome is. And soil allows for so much creativity! From lush gardens to the mud pies of children, soil is full of potential. If we were to look at the soils of UUCCI – both literal and metaphorical – what would we find?

This Sunday, we continue on the topic of change and transition and extend it to the community. How do we cultivate curiosity for the journeys of others, here at UUCCI and outside of our community? How do we cultivate as a community the ability to let others continue to change and transition?

We are always learning, growing, and evolving in our own understanding of what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist. Love, however, is always central to putting our UU values into action. In this service designed for All Ages to participate together, we will sing, share stories, and reflect on words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that call us to work for justice and liberation year round.

We begin with Elizabeth Valencia-Gutierrez by reflecting on change and transition. Author William Bridges made a distinction between change and transitions. Bridges writes, "without a transition, a change is just a rearrangement of the furniture. Unless transition happens, the change won't work, because it doesn't 'take'. Whatever word we use, our society talks a lot about change; but it seldom deals with transition."

Our Minister Emeritus, Rev. Dennis McCarty, will return to speak on "The Challenge of Beloved Community." It's easy to talk about equality and diversity. But actually listening to people with different cultural experience--forming a truly diverse community--can be difficult. Rev. Dennis will share some of his cultural struggles, as well as his thoughts on the Unitarian Universalist Association's proposed changes to our Seven Principles.

Author of Wilderness Plots, The Conservationist Manifesto, Divine Animal, and 17 other books, and known around Indiana for his story-telling skills, Scott has appeared previously at UUCCI in concerts and Sunday services. After reading Dr. Sanders’ essay collection Staying Put, Rev. Nic was inspired to make its ideas the focus of his upcoming sabbatical and to invite Sanders to conduct a weekend retreat for UUCCI in February. Marge Piercy says, "Every gardener knows that after the digging, after the planting, after the long season of tending and growth, the harvest comes." Rev. Nic concludes our six-part Life Roots Sermon Series, as we celebrate the fruits of our labor and the aspirations we have for the coming year. On this Generosity Sunday, we are invited to appreciate the gardener's patience, as embodied in the wisdom and spirit of asparagus.
