In this guest presentation, Ross Carper, Co-Founder of Feast World Kitchen, will discuss the hardships facing immigrants and refugees in Spokane. This panel presentation will discuss the ways Feast World Kitchen, through its Chef Partners Program and Table Time, support immigrants and refugees who are working very hard to learn English, gain employment, and stabilize their lives. Ross writes: “Our immigrant communities are full of talents, skills, and resilience they want to use and share. When they are empowered to do so, they can help themselves and their families – and they enrich the entire community of Spokane.” The special collection for February will benefit Feast World Kitchen’s emergency fund, which assists immigrants and refugees with housing and medical emergencies, and short term educational supports.

Jacob Johns, a community supported organizer and Unitarian Universalist from the Akimal O’otham and Hopi Nations, will update our congregation on his work championing climate policy rooted in global solidarity at the 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties in Belem, Brazil where he led an indigenous delegation last fall. Johns, a Spokane resident, has traveled the world to stand up for a wide range of causes, including protecting water and opposing the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

What if your congregation could help dismantle mass incarceration — simply by walking with one person returning home from prison? In this guest presentation, Candice Baughman, a formerly incarcerated person, will discuss the work of “One Parish One Prison”, an organization that equips congregations and community groups of every size — traditional, progressive, interfaith, or secular-leaning — to build meaningful, supportive pre-release relationships with an incarcerated person returning to their neighborhood. She will share her story of incarceration and the value of “One Parish One Prison” in helping her re-enter her community after her release from prison.
