Abraham Lincoln credited Unitarian and Universalist minister Thomas Starr King with saving California for the Union.
On the 199th anniversary of his birth, we review his most extraordinary life that took him from New England to California.
And learn how the state honors him as a beloved figure, and how, more recently, right wing elements have worked to erase him from our nation's history.
All piano accompaniment by Alex Pietsch.

For this podcast episode, the "Sounds" are mostly spoken rather than sung or performed instrumentally, alas, due to copyright issues with musical compositions and arrangements in a downloadable podcast. As always, the amazing music can be heard in the unedited YouTube video created from our Livestreamed services, at our YouTube channel:

What you will hear are some deservedly happy-clappy announcements--including some clever volunteer coercion!--and an original, musical meditation.

While learning about the ancient traditions, we can learn as well from how some frequently quoted-out-of-context parables can be applied to our own lives.
Learn how to invest YOURSELF in something bigger.

These native stories shared in service, while engaging and occasionally hilarious, are individually copyright protected, some from decades past. Thus it is doubtful we'd be able to secure copyright protections any time soon, if ever. Thus these tales (one a tale of tails) cannot be included in this podcast although, as always, you can hear and see what went on by visiting our YouTube channel.

While our service focused on security procedures on the UUMAN campus, we elected not to livestream that portion of the service to the online public.
However, we wanted to share this month's 50/50 recipient, North Fulton Community Charities. We've included a presentation by NFCC's Sharri Morgan, who explains their mission, our church's longtime connection with the organization, and how the Michelin Man is involved in fashion decisions.

Today's service audio focuses on how, when you get right down to it, we never do anything alone - success, failure, joy, grief. We celebrate our joys and hold one another in our grief.
How do we support one another? Sometimes it's a "parking lot angel," as you'll hear.
And another way we support one another is through the acceptance of new members to our beloved community. This episode begins with a new member ceremony, before the service readings.

"May we remember the very best of who they were, and what they embodied. And may we embody that essence in our lives."
Due to the intensely personal nature of this service, and to potential privacy and security concerns of a downloadable podcast episode, the specific reading of names of those who've died in the last year has been cut from this particular audio. However, you will hear our tribute to those we've lost, along with a call-and-response from minister to congregation.
As always, you'll hear our typical Sunday service introductions, visitors checking in, Harvest Moon Auction information dramatically delivered by its co-chair, and bits of merriment in anticipation of a Fall Festival just about to unfold after the grown-ups emerge from the sanctuary.

How did we get to believe that “making sense” is an intellectual, rather than a sensual, thing? Things “make sense” not when we engage the mind but when we engage the senses. And re-engaging our senses may well be at the root of our salvation. You'll also hear a Child Dedication (welcome, Koda!), upcoming event announcements, and original compositions performed by Music Director Alex Pietsch.

Leaving the faith system that you grew up in is difficult - and often traumatic and/or life-altering. But doubt need not be the death of faith. In this episode, you'll be provided with guidelines to maintaining one's own comfort level of fidelity to one's principles.
Also, you'll hear what happens when a chalice decides to extinguish itself mid-service, and an improvised-on-the-spot musical duet for piano and recorder.
