Nurses at UW Health have voted for a three-day strike starting September 13. With hundreds of nurses prepared to walk out, it’s Wisconsin’s largest strike for union recognition in at least 50 years.
For today’s show, guest host Frank Emspak speaks with two UW nurses, Shari Signer and Justin Giebel, about why they’re prepared to strike.
They talk about the working conditions and challenges to providing quality healthcare that have led up to this moment, including lean staffing, low pay, and a “profits over patients” corporate mindset.
Shari Signer has been a nurse at UW Health for fifteen years and currently works in the Infusion Center.
Justin Giebel is a registered nurse in the Trauma Life Center at UW Health.
