I think the effect that Jesus wants this promise to have on the disciples is to give them strength to continue in their meekness. This is the way the promise works in verse 12 Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way. In other words, the promise of great reward gives the disciples strength to endure persecution and embrace it. So I think the promise that the meek will inherit the earth is intended by the Lord to give us the strength to endure in meekness when our natural inclination would be to defend ourselves or retaliate in anger. you don’t need to win in this world because God has already made you an inheritor of it.
