THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah Featuring Valentine's Day In Japan
Today, we’re talking about something sweet, romantic, and uniquely Japanese – Valentine’s Day!
We are exploring the rich Valentine's Japanese traditions.
Valentine's Day is rooted in ancient Rome and involves a mix of love, rebellion, and a bit of mystery! The day is named after Saint Valentine, but here’s the twist—there were several Saint Valentines.
The most famous story revolves around a priest named Valentine who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Claudius believed that single men were better soldiers than married ones, so he outlawed marriage so young men could focus on building his army.
And what happened was that Valentine rebelled! He secretly performed weddings for young couples in love. When the emperor found out, Valentine was arrested and eventually executed on February 14th—hence the date.
However, there’s another layer to this story. While Valentine was in prison, he’s said to have healed the jailer’s blind daughter and, before his execution, wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine.” That phrase stuck and became a symbol of affection.
