Shot put champion Dame Valerie Adams has changed her coach and will relocate to Christchurch for four days a week in an attempt to shake things up ahead of next year's Tokyo Olympics.

Adams is now under the guidance of Dale Stevenson, who also coaches the New Zealand men's champion, Tom Walsh.

The Olympic double gold medallist has been coached by Athletics New Zealand's High Performance Director, Scott Goodman, since the 2016 Olympics.

She has two young children, including one with type one diabetes and Goodman admitted to our sports reporter, Barry Guy, that there was some initial concerns about making the change.
