Metaphors are the heart of theology-- religious thinking that informs how we live. Unfortunately, Empires always try to co-opt theology to serve its agenda. Empires sold us the metaphor of God as a white man in the sky who knows all your behavior and gives out presents for obedience or punishments for rebellion (kinda like Santa Claus). Even when we don't buy into bad metaphors anymore, though, it is harder than it seems though to decolonize our minds, words, prayers, practices, hearts, and theology. Furthermore, sometimes an old metaphor for God that was meant to oppress can be repurposed for great liberation. The human being is very resilient and gardens can break through cracks in the cement when given enough time. This Sunday, John will share a reflection on metaphors and understandings of God that fits into annual Fall series called "Letting Go." Whether you have been deeply molded by institutional religion or never set foot into a spiritual community until V&M, the dominant culture of this country drenches us in oppressive theological ideas. In November we'll be naming the harmful theologies around us and casting vision for liberating alternatives. The remaining line up of topics for November will be: Nov 12- God: from Mean Ol' Man on a Cloud to Ocean of Infinite Grace Nov 19- Jesus: from God's Press Secretary to Subversive Performance Artist Nov 26- Church: from Fortress of Dogma to Spiritual Compost Heap
