Chivalry is alive and well in Arthur Butt's novel, Valley of Shadows. Anyone who enjoys knights in shining armor and damsels in distress will love this time travel with a twist. Protagonist Ted Cole doesn't hide the fact that he's from the future, and he doesn't make a big deal out of it, except to occasionally offer helpful battle techniques not yet discovered. And as he and close friend Darel-tan strive to rescue sweetheart and sister, La-tan from Raco-ab, nearly everyone calls him Ted Cole. Not Ted or Mr. Cole, but Ted Cole. Perhaps it's because many people of that day had more complicated names.
Another twist is the way characters send thoughts to each other, occasionally closing their minds if they're angry with someone. There are abilities and weapons we wouldn't think possible, especially so far in the past, and the surprises never stop as Ted Cole and Darel focus on their mission, protecting themselves from huge wild animals as well as people, not always certain of who's trustworthy and who's not.
The author's knowledge concerning castles, moats, weapons, and medieval warfare is impressive, and he pulls it all together in a masterful flurry of action, somehow managing bits of comic relief, even in the heat of battle. Valley of Shadows is an excellent "clean read" for someone wishing to be transported back to the days of horses and swords, royalty and kingdoms.
