In the sermon "What Proverbs Says About Friends" from Proverbs 27, Pastor John explored the biblical portrait of true friendship using the acronym F.R.I.E.N.D.S. True friends are Faithful, loving consistently through all seasons of life (Prov 17:17; 18:24), not driven by gain (19:4), and are Reputable, avoiding harmful influences and walking with the wise (13:20; 1 Cor 15:33). They offer Intentional Advice (27:9), steering clear of extremes like flattery or harshness. They speak words that Encourage, build up, and give grace (Eph 4:29), not harm or annoyance (Prov 27:14-15). A true friend is also Nearby, showing up in need and adversity (27:10), not just in convenience. A good friend is also Direct, willing to offer loving correction (27:5-6), and Sharpening, “Iron sharpens iron and one person sharpens another” Proverbs 27:17. Proverbs teaches that godly friendships are intentional, truth-filled, and rooted in love and wisdom.

Proverbs teaches that gentle words calm anger and even break resistance, while reckless speech invites conflict and ruin. We are warned against gossip and self-praise, called instead to speak with humility, to listen before answering, and to value truth. Drawing from James 3 and Bonhoeffer’s insight, the sermon reminds us that the failure to listen is the beginning of spiritual decay. Ultimately, wise words, fitly spoken, reflect the heart of God and nourish those who hear them.

In James 3:17, we are given a portrait of wisdom that is not merely intellectual, but deeply moral and relational—marked by purity, peace, gentleness, openness to reason, mercy, good fruit, impartiality, and sincerity. This character-based wisdom is the same wisdom championed throughout Proverbs, which opens with a call to fear the Lord as the beginning of knowledge (1:7) and wisdom (9:10), framing the entire book around the central tension of two paths: the way of the wise and the way of the foolish. The Proverbs—whether from Solomon, the wise, Agur, or King Lemuel—consistently point to the fear of the Lord as the foundation for godly character. Integrity secures and guides; peace flows from humility and restraint; truth and humility make us open to reason; mercy overcomes vengeance; and sincere love covers offenses and brings blessing. True wisdom is not just about what we know but who we are becoming—a life formed by the fear of the Lord and shaped by the character of Christ.

On Easter Sunday, Pastor John delivered a heartfelt message titled "From Death to Life," walking us through the powerful story of redemption using the word LIFE spelled backwards to remind us that through Jesus, what seemed like the end was really a new beginning. He started with E—End to the Story—from Genesis 3:15, showing how God’s promise to crush the serpent’s head foretold the victory of the cross. Then came F—Full Truth—from 1 Corinthians 15:1–9, reminding us that the resurrection is not a myth but the core truth of our faith, witnessed by many. I stood for Irresistible Hope, drawn from John 11:21, where even in the face of death, Jesus brings hope that cannot be shaken. Finally, L—Longed for Love—reflected in the intimacy of the Last Supper in Luke 22 and the restoration of Peter in John 21, showing us a Savior who loves deeply and forgives completely. From death to life, this message reminded us that Easter is not just about an empty tomb, but about a risen Savior who rewrites every story with grace.
