  • #18 - Smart: Fragmented Internet
    Date: October 27th, 2015
Everything in our age is accelerating. Digitisation is increasing globalisation tenfold; social networks have gone mobile: telephone, television and towns themselves have gone “smart”. From Silicon Valley to Tokyo, from Brazil to Washington, from South Africa to Southern India, and all the way to Cuba and Gaza, Frédéric Martel’s book “SMART: Ces Internets qui nous rendent intelligents” offers an unprecedented investigation in the field, covering the internet battle and its future. In this event, he presented a cartography of the Internet and argued that people involved in the web are, in fact, as adaptable as the Internet.
The event was organized in partnership with Brazil’s French Institute.

  • #12 - Why Information Grows?
    Date: May 15th, 2015
What is economic growth? And why, historically, has it occurred only in a few places? Previous efforts to answer these questions have focused on institutions, geography, finances, and psychology. But according to MIT’s antidisciplinarian César Hidalgo, understanding the nature of economic growth demands transcending the social sciences and including the natural sciences of information, networks, and complexity. In this event, Hidalgo argues that to understand the growth of economies, we first need to understand the growth of order.

  • #11 - Participation, Democracy and Technology
    Date: April 23rd, 2015
Digital technologies: what is their influence on civic engagement and democratic processes? Despite having the potential to transform democratic processes, digital technologies present challenges, such as political polarization online. ITS Rio received Ethan Zuckerman (MIT Media Lab) and Ivan Krastev (Vienna Institute of Science) to discuss this topic and present new perspectives and possible solutions.
