Anyone can sacrifice their life for a greater cause but in a certain way that can still be self serving. The ultimate sacrifice is the sacrifice of Avraham Avinu - he was ready to sacrifice himself. He was ready to destroy everything that was important to him simply because Hashem asked him to. The sacrifice of Akeidas Yitzchak blazed the trail for all Jews throughout time who have not just given up their lives but given up themselves in the service of Hashem.
