This evening we discuss the small letter Alef at the end of the word VaYIkra (and He called...), balancing Moshe's drive for humility with God's need to communicate imminence. We investigate how we are to celebrate this Purim amidst the war in Gaza and the global rise in antisemitism. We draw on a range of sources, presented by Rabbi JJ Schacter at a recent Yeshiva University Rabbis' Conference I attended, to elicit a balanced, nuanced approach, where joy and trembling stand side by side.
