  • UK: Largest Vegan and Veggie Launch to Date at Waitrose with 36 new products
UK supermarket Waitrose has announced its largest-ever vegan and vegetarian product launches with two new ranges. Featuring the new Plantlife and GoVeggie ranges, the new products provide healthy and simple meals, snacks, and treats.  After recently launching its Holistic Living brand, Waitrose plans to continue to expand its meat-free offerings, with the brand quoting recent research from Veganuary as an inspiration. The study found that six months from Veganuary 2021, 82% of participants have maintained a dramatic reduction in their animal product consumption. The new Waitrose ranges feature ‘first to market’ products in the supermarket prepared meal sector, including Crispy No Beef with Sweet Chilli Sauce, Thai Style No Fish Cakes, No Chorizo Tortelloni and Mushroom Scallop Linguine. More products are expected for October 2021 and prices range from £2 to £5. “We wanted to provide our customers with more choice when it came to incorporating a holistic approach to their meals. Making “meat free Monday” or a flexitarian lifestyle even easier, these new ranges have inspired us to be more innovative.  For example, by using pulses, we’ve been able to recreate a white sauce for products in the new Plantlife range such as Moussaka and Potato Dauphinoise which rivals any bechamel sauce we’ve tried!” commented Martyn Lee, Executive Chef at Waitrose.   ...

  • Beyond Investing’s Vegan Climate ETF Celebrates Two Years of Outperforming the S&P 500
Beyond Investing‘s vegan  Exchange Traded Fund, the US Vegan Climate ETF (ticker: VEGN) marks two years since launch with almost $65million in assets and outperformance versus the S&P500 Index since inception VEGN has returned a total of 67.91% vs S&P 500 Index’s 57.07% (on market price) since inception to end of August 2021. Claire Smith, CEO of Beyond Investing, and a renowned global expert in ethical investment, says: “More than anything, the enormous success of VEGN ETF underlines that animal-friendly and climate-conscious investing can be good for people, planet and your pocketbook. With the expansion of our product range into global small cap thematic and regional vegan climate indexes, our aim is to provide complete portfolio solutions for vegans and environmentalists that bring about a kinder, cleaner, healthier world.” With this goal in mind, the fund is free from animal exploitation, weapons-free and free from fossil fuels. VEGN aims to avoid investing in any activities that harm animals, screening out companies that are involved in animal ...

  • UK: McDonald’s to Finally Launch McPlant After Developing Vegan Cheese in Collaboration With Kerry
McDonald’s is set to finally launch its vegan McPlant burger in the UK after a months-long search for the perfect plant-based cheese. The burger will be available from late September, initially launching at a few locations in Coventry. In its quest to find a suitable cheese, McDonald’s says it experimented with hundreds of brands from all over the world but wasn’t satisfied with them. In the end, the chain decided to create its own. To do this, it collaborated with Irish food company Kerry. The resulting cheese is made with coconut oil and is said to have the same flavour and texture as dairy cheese. Kerry was previously best known for its dairy products but is increasingly pivoting into the plant-based sector. It owns alt-meat brand Taste & Glory, and has also launched a highly successful vegan range under its conventional meat brand Richmond. Last year, it was ranked #5 on the FAIRR list of global companies actively supporting plant-based foods and beverages. Along with Kerry’s cheese, the McPlant features a Beyond Meat patty and vegan sandwich sauce, plus burger trimmings like pickles and lettuce. While it will start rolling out at the end of the month, it won’t be available at all locations until January 2022. “It took us longer [than other brands] because we needed to get the consistency right,” a McDonald’s spokeswoman told iNews. “Customers expect a certain taste when they visit McDonald’s. The build is really important – even how we stack ingredients together has an ...
