Velvele Podcast

Art has been used as a tool for queer migrants to negotiate their identities, resist oppression,  and confront stereotypes. Activism has been a crucial aspect of queer migration studies,  challenging heteronormative assumptions and advocating for the rights of queer migrants.  This roundtable will bring together perspectives from art and academia to examine the ways  in which art and activism have been used as tools to resist oppression and advocate for the  rights of queer migrants.

Queer migration literature has challenged the heteronormative assumptions that have traditionally shaped both academic and activist discourses on migration. This panel focuses on contemporary issues in the field of queer migration by looking into the experiences of transnational mobilities, displacement, and exile from an interdisciplinary perspective. 
This recording is from the conference titled "Navigating the Changing Times of Gender, Sexuality, and Migration in Europe,” organized in June 2023 in Berlin with the collaboration of the Humboldt University of Berlin and Heinrich Böll Foundation.

In the third episode, Yener Bayramoğlu (London) and Fulden (Istanbul) host Migrationsrat Berlin, an umbrella organization of over 80 migration organizations of people of color.

Koray Yılmaz Günay from Migrationsrat Berlin talks about the experiences of working class immigrants in Germany. As well, he mentions the commonalities and differences between the struggles of immigrants and LGBTQI+s in 1990s while delving into the history of queer organization Gladt.

In the very first episode, Fulden (Istanbul) and Yener Bayramoğlu (London) have a conversation with Ceylan and Galina from the UK-based organization Mesopotamian and Anatolian Queers for Azadî (MAQFA UK). 

MAQFA members, who work to make the LGBTQ+ struggle visible in Britain, also talked about the impact of the country's colonial history on immigrants and their relationship with LGBTQ+ activism in Turkey.
