On 5 June 1976 the Teton Dam failed on its first filling, killing 11 people. The agency had been warned in writing by its own geologists, by the USGS, and by a former Bureau geologist who testified under oath. Fifty years later at the anniversary memorial, Idaho officials floated building again in the same drainage — and a state-federal basin study now underway lists a Teton dam as one option.
