Question- In many countries plastic bags are the main source of rubbish, causing pollution on land and in the water, so many people think they should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Essay: Plastic bags are becoming more and more of a problem, especially in some countries where they are not recycled. Because they are not reused but thrown away, they contaminate not only the soil, but also water and, therefore, many people believe they should not be produced or sold anymore. In this essay, I will give three reasons why I agree with this statement.
One of the risks of having non-reusable plastic bags in circulation is soil acidification. When thrown somewhere that is not a bin, these bags do not turn into compost, because they are not biodegradable. They, in fact, break down into tiny pieces, called micro-plastics that are absorbed by the soil, causing the acidification of it. Another problem occurs when the bags land on fields, sometimes carried by the wind. This material can take hundreds of years to decompose and when on a crop, it stops the plant from breathing and, as a result, the plants die and cannot be harvested.
Plastic bags, however, are not only threatening the soil, but water as well. One of the most reported issues is the killing of the creatures that live in the water. Many animals, such as dolphins and turtles, eat plastic bags thinking it is prey, jellyfishes for instance. Once they have done so, they will not feel the need to eat again and actually die of hunger. Many times, especially with birds, pieces of plastics will be brought to baby animals by their parents to feed them, causing an entire progeny to die. If nothing is done, many species may die out.
In conclusion, I strongly agree with those who think that plastic bags should be considered as hazardous waste and should be banned, especially for the reasons outlined in this essay.
