  • From Jersey Boy to Warrior: Dale Throneberry's Military Odyssey

    Send us Fan Mail

Dale Throneberry's life reads like an American odyssey—from carefree days on the Jersey Shore to the perilous skies above Vietnam and eventually to the broadcast booth where he helps fellow veterans find their voices. Born in 1946 to a World War II veteran father, Dale's journey weaves through the defining moments of late 20th century America with remarkable candor and insight.

With refreshing humor, Throneberry recounts his transition from a distracted student whose teacher noted his attention span was "that of a gnat" to an Army helicopter pilot flying combat missions. When facing the draft in 1968, he chose the warrant officer flight program over infantry assignment—a decision that would define the next chapter of his life. His vivid descriptions of learning to fly the OH-23 Hiller helicopter transport listeners into the cockpit: "A helicopter requires you to use all four extremities at the same time while you're talking."

The heart of Dale's story unfolds during his year in Vietnam with the 195th Assault Helicopter Company. Through harrowing accounts of being shot down in a rice paddy, conducting dangerous special operations missions into Cambodia, and witnessing the deaths of fellow pilots, we experience both the terror and camaraderie of combat. One particular mission on October 9, 1970, when a command helicopter exploded before his eyes, remains etched in his memory decades later: "That was the first time I cried while I was there."

Like many Vietnam veterans, Throneberry struggled to find his footing after returning home. His path wound through college degrees, teaching positions, and an unfulfilling insurance career before a chance conversation in 2003 led to co-founding Veterans Radio—a platform dedicated to sharing veterans' stories. This work became his most profound mission, creating space for veterans to be heard while processing his own experiences through helping others.

Throughout his remarkable life story, Dale's resilience shines through, culminating in the wisdom he hopes to pass on: "If you get knocked down, get up. You're never defeated until you don't get up." His journey reminds us that healing often comes through serving others, and that every veteran has a story worth telling—especially their own.

  • Finding Jon Bureman: The Journey of an Air Force Veteran

    Send us Fan Mail

Air Force veteran Jon Bureman takes us through his remarkable life journey from military child to signals intelligence specialist to recovery advocate. Born at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas, John's childhood spanned continents as his family moved between military installations in Japan, Maine, and back to Japan again. These constant relocations shaped his search for identity and belonging throughout his life.

After graduating high school in Japan, Jon followed family tradition by enlisting in the Air Force, where his aptitude for patterns and numbers led him to Morse code and signals intelligence work. While excelling professionally through assignments in Hawaii, Maryland, and Alaska, Jon battled growing alcoholism – a demon he later discovered his father had secretly fought as well.

The conversation delves unflinchingly into Jon's creation of an alter-ego he called "JB" who "didn't give a shit" – a persona that allowed him to separate his high-achieving military career from his personal demons. His deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan provided temporary forced sobriety but ultimately deepened his struggles upon return to civilian life.

The turning point came in 2018 when hospitalization for a rare blood disorder forced complete sobriety. This medical crisis became a spiritual awakening that completely transformed Jon's outlook. He moved to Oklahoma, explored acting and entertainment careers, and participated in veterans' adventure programs that helped him reconnect with nature and himself.

Now pursuing a degree in social psychology to help others avoid the struggles he endured; Jon's story exemplifies resilience and redemption. His journey from alcohol dependence to self-discovery offers powerful insights about acceptance, purpose, and the healing power of authentic connection. As Jon powerfully states: "Treat yourself as you would treat your best friend. Life is great. Live it every day."

  • From Army Service to Line Worker: Art Hill's American Journey

    Send us Fan Mail

Art Hill's remarkable journey from rural Michigan to World War II service and beyond captivates with its blend of humor, resilience, and unexpected adventures. Born in 1926 in Ionia, Michigan, Art grew up in Vicksburg during the Great Depression in a household with nine siblings. His childhood memories paint a vivid picture of rural American life – from trapping muskrats for extra money to the Sunday ritual of his mother preparing freshly killed chickens for dinner.

When Art turned 18, he applied for immediate induction into military service during World War II. His crossing to Europe aboard a Liberty ship yielded one of his most practical wartime lessons: eating dill pickles in mustard prevented seasickness while fellow soldiers suffered miserably around him. Art's recollections of his time in Germany, Belgium, and France aren't focused on combat, but rather on the colorful, sometimes humorous experiences of a young American soldier abroad – building (and falling out of) a treehouse in the woods, unexpected encounters with European women, and witnessing the aftermath of war alongside allied forces.

After returning home on the Queen Elizabeth (which made the journey in just 5 days compared to the 17-day voyage to Europe), Art briefly taught swimming at Fort Benning before being discharged and returning to Michigan. Despite lacking a high school diploma, Art's exceptional work ethic caught the attention of Consumers Power Company inspectors. This led to a long career working on high voltage power lines, where he advanced from lineman to supervisor despite the formal education requirements typically needed for such positions.

Throughout his life story, Art's practical wisdom, adaptability, and unfiltered perspective offer a genuine glimpse into the experiences of the Greatest Generation. His narrative reminds us how individual Americans navigated through world-changing events and built meaningful lives and careers in their aftermath.
