After Her Service is a program for Post-9/11 women veterans designed to build personal resilience and foster professional success. It is based upon a Women Veterans’ Needs Assessment that the M-SPAN team conducted in 2016 to identify challenges and gaps in services for Post-9/11 women veterans. After Her Service was created to address these concerns, which include reintegrating into civilian life; setting and meeting professional goals; and developing effective ways to cope and manage stress.

The program begins with a skill-building retreat focused on increasing resiliency. Following the retreat, participants engage in up to 12 sessions of professional, one-on-one coaching to set and meet career goals. Three retreats have been held since 2017.

Program manager, Jennifer Lamb talks about her service in the Marines, her transition, her role with After Her Service, success of the program and the need for funding.  She discusses this innovative program from Michigan Medicine with host Jim Fausone.

Phil Marshall was a 21 year old Warrant Officer Huey Dustoff pilot in Vietnam. In November of 1969, he was wounded on an insecure night rescue of 3 seriously wounded soldiers.

Marshall’s ever-growing series of Vietnam Helicopter Rescues documents the helicopter rescue missions that were flown by very youthful crews. The stories are all told by the men who flew the missions and are not embellished. They are as true as they can be remembered; a truly amazing series of missions flown by very humble men doing uncommon things.

Who is  a veteran? Simple question. Not so simple answer.  VA, DOD, States, and Locals all use different definitions. National Veterans Business Development Council (NVBDC) uses 38 USC 4211 to define a veteran.  NVBDC's founder Keith King talks to host Jim Fausone about the definition and the certification process.

Carla Monteiro of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum explains the origins of the museum, how it got a naval destroyer, her great volunteers and the ghost named "Paul" that lives on the ship. This week’s program is a look back at our newest regular feature on Veterans Radio called “There I Was …”.

“There I Was …” is an open mic program where veterans tell their stories.

This collection of veteran stories tells us about their experiences in basic training.

Erica Robertson holds a MBA from University of Michigan, worked for Accenture consulting and Nike as a change agent.  She is now a K -  12 Education crusader and change agent in Metro Detroit.  She wrote about her upbrining and intergenerational trauma in her book "Adventures of a Little Black Detroit Girl".  Her story is that of a single mother at 18, working two minimum wage jobs to make ends meet.  

This interview focuses on the reasons she joined the Navy and what she got out of that service.  Erica explains how it was transformational in her life and she wishes more young people would consider a few years in service.   Erica's now focused on eduction for children of color and  her 501c3  "Education at Scale" and her publishing company "Little Black Girl Adventures".  She has a wide ranging discussion with host Jim Fausone.

WWII POWs were interned in Michigan during a labor shortage. Learn about the locations of the Italian and German POWs from author and scholar Gregory SumnerDr. Citino is the Senior Historian at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. He talks about the historical significance of their museum collection and their online learning programs.

Army veteran Sean Passmore is head of Military Talent External Recruiting and Enterprise Military and Veteran Initiatives for Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC).  He is responsible for developing national relationships with the military and veteran community and overseeing Wells Fargo’s Military Affairs Program, created in 2012.   He is a Mustang moving from enlisted ranks to officer.  He retired as a Major and in his civilian career has focused on talent acquisition.   He spent time at USAA before Wells Fargo.  He talks to host Jim Fausone about his service and veterans employment issues.
