Simple Faith

Helpless dependence

Mark 5:34 (ESV) And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”


Faith receives what grace has provided.
What Jesus has done on my behalf is enough.


Mark 3:35 (ESV) “For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

Mark 5:36 (ESV) But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”

When All The Stars Are Gone

The Storm-Tossed Ship: Acts 27:1-44

Acts 27:7-10, 18-20 (ESV) 

Since we were violently storm-tossed, they began the next day to jettison the cargo. And on the third day they threw the ship’s tackle overboard with their own hands. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.

Faith sees the world through the reality of God’s Kingdom.

Romans 8:5–6 (ESV) For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Acts 27:20-26 (ESV) 

Faith is living surrendered to God.

Acts 27:23 (ESV) For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship,

Faith aligns with God’s will.


Acts 27:24 (ESV) and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Faith trusts in the authority of God’s word.


Acts 27:25 (ESV) So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told. But we must run aground on some island.”

Acts 27:33-36 (ESV) As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food, having taken nothing. Therefore I urge you to take some food. For it will give you strength, for not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you.” And when he had said these things, he took bread, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat. Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves.

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

Why do we celebrate Jubilee?

Remember & Celebrate — thanking God for the past year (Luke 17:11-19)
Listen & Dream — hearing God for the next year (Genesis 22:9-12)

It is important to keep an open ear to hear the voice of God.

Conclusion

Philippians 4:4-8 (CSB) Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy — dwell on these things.

Pride is Satan damaging God’s image.

Pride goes before the fall & destruction.

Proverbs 6:18
Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins.

Proverbs 6:16
Pride is the source of all contention.

Proverbs 13:10
Pride is the door to every evil work.

James 3:16

ATTRIBUTES OF HUMILITY 

Dependency on God.

2 Corinthians 4:7 (NKJV)

Weakness (dependency on God)
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NKJV)

Glory in weakness
God’s power (grace) rest in human weakness.
Take pleasure in weakness, persecution…
Religious pride is the worst of all pride.

Self-righteousness

EVERYTHING WE ARE, HAVE, KNOW & CAN DO COMES FROM GOD
