Next up in our "Newer Isn't Always Better" series is a John Carpenter remake double-feature with The Fog & The Thing. As a reminder, even though part of the reason for the title of this series is to poke fun at ourselves (with our "official" relaunch of the podcast) - and even though each movie that we will be discussing in this series does not live up to its predecessor - there are a few important things that we want to mention. First of all, the originals of the movies that we will be discussing (The Evil Dead, The Fog, The Thing, and RoboCop) are all incredible movies and it would almost be impossible for any movie to live up to the reputation. And this leads into the second point...just because "newer isn't always better" does not inherently mean that newer is bad. And finally, we do not want this series to come across as just bashing remakes. We will be providing our honest opinions (good and bad), but we will not be hating on a movie just to hate on a movie. This is especially true in tonight's episode, as we both had pretty strong negative reactions to The Fog remake. Here at Video Monsters, we view John Carpenter as a master of horror and pretty much love every movie that he has made. And while Carpenter was involved with The Fog (2005) as a producer, it is sadly an empty shell of a genuinely great ghost story. So, even though we do our best to not hate on a movie just to hate on a movie, we do give our honest opinions of the shortcomings of this film. This episode does also include our review of The Thing (2011), but not as much time is spent on this movie as it follows the notes of the original so closely that even though it is technically a prequel, it is a pretty blatant remake. But, with all that being said, we hope that you enjoy our reviews of two remakes of a master of horror!!
