Video Monsters

Don’t keep away from PUMPKINHEAD (1988),

Unless you're tired of great movies.

Watching it is mostly fun,

But beware, it has a cruel streak

30 minutes in and you're undone

By a moving turn from Lance Henricksen,

As he seeks vengeance for what was done

To a small young boy, his only son

Time will not erase or blot,

Stan Winston’s first directing appearance,

And just in case you all forgot,

The creature effects are utter brilliance,

So with bolted doors and windows barred,

And love for monsters in your heart,

The Video Monster dare to tread,

Onto the sacred ground of Pumpkinhead!

The Video Monsters have been exiled to the New England wilderness as we contend with the plague of horrors unleashed by Robert Eggers’s THE WITCH (2015). Is the film a touching family tragedy? A coming-of-age story about bad parenting as self-fulfilling prophecy? A cautionary tale about the extremes of theocratic patriarchal social structures? A liberating good-for-her narrative about a young woman bucking gender norms in Puritan society? Or is it actually just a thinly-veiled sitcom in the guise of a 17th-century religious horror film? The Video Monsters will attempt to answer all these questions and so much more. So take a break from chopping wood, grab your baby paste, and live deliciously with us because Black Phillip compels you to listen to our review of THE WITCH!

The Video Monsters kick off our series on Folk Horror films with an underseen 80s gem that features far more explosions than your typical witch-in-the-woods flick. Make sure to get your vision checked ahead of time because on today’s episode we’ll be discussing EYES OF FIRE (1983)! For those of you who have not heard of this film, just imagine a mash-up of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE with Robert Eggers’s THE VVITCH and you’ll be like… 30% of the way to figuring out what to expect from this deeply strange little film. So swallow that frog in your throat, look out for exploding cat children, and meet us in the woods with the tree faces (seriously, this movie is weird) as we gaze upon Avery Crounse’s EYES OF FIRE!

The podcast which you are about to hear is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five friends, in particular Kyle Kuchta and fellow guest, Wolfe MacReady. It is all the more tragic in that they volunteered for this. But, had they continued to podcast for a very, very long time, they could not have expected nor would they have wished to see as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that night. For them an idyllic Tuesday night recording session became a nightmare. The events of that transpired were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre episodes in the annals of Video Monsters history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre… POPCORN PUNCHOUT.

Hello, kiddies (because of course we had to start it this way)! The Video Monsters are closing out our 1995 horror series with the spooky, spine-tingling, and – dare I say – seductive siege flick, TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT! Joining us for this ghastly good time is special guest and master of SCARE-emonies, Brian Salisbury of Junkfood Cinema! Together we’ll discuss childhood Crypt-Keeper nightmares, our willingness to sacrifice humanity for Billy Zane, and the missed marketing opportunity of holy flasks. All that AND an increasingly unhinged impression of Gerard Butler? What more could you want?! So save the cat, fasten your drool cups, and ready your vomit bags because we’re going to the movies with Ernest Dickerson’s TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT (1995)!

The Video Monsters are joined by filmmaker Anthony Cousins (When Susurrus Stirs, The Bloody Ballad of Squirt Reynolds, Scare Package, Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge) to discuss the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.! If you've been following the podcast for a while, you know that Super Mario Bros. holds a very special place in our hearts and we are always excited to discuss it. The troubled production, poor reception upon release, and negative critiques over the years (in large part due to how far it seemingly strays from its source material) have given Super Mario Bros. the unfair stigma of being "one of the worst movies ever made." But here at Video Monsters, we hope to right some of the wrongs of cinematic history by giving our heartfelt analysis of how the acting and world-building (despite some of the behind the scenes production issues) bring so much life and depth to the film, how the film is surprisingly faithful in its adaptation of the video game, and how we have a deep and unironic love of this film that has only grown (or, should I say "evolved") over the years. So grab your tools, put on your thwomp stompers, and trust the fungus as you dive into the podcast dimension with us for our analysis of Super Mario Bros.!!

The Video Monsters continue their Chattanooga Film Festival 2023 coverage by discussing THE HAUNTING OF HYPE HOUSE (2023) - an indie, horror-comedy that answers the question "what if you were haunted by a ghost...and everyone liked the ghost more than they like you?" - all through the lens of influencer culture. Nathan has been singing the praises of this film for months and is, dead ass, extremely excited to be joined by very special guests Matt Farren, Mahlon Tracy, Michael Salamone, Royal Dean, and Brandon Douglas to finally discuss the The Haunting of Hype House! If you've not yet seen the film, the first half of the episode is a mostly spoiler-free discussion, before diving a bit deeper into analysis in the second half. So grab your giant plush tiger, pick up your water bottle, and make sure the camera is rolling as you meet us at the Ouija board for THE HAUNTING OF HYPE HOUSE!!

We support the hard work of all of the actors, writers, and everyone else involved in creating movies, which we are very passionate about. So it is important to note that The Haunting of Hype House is not affiliated with AMPTP and therefore exempt from the strike.
