Malnutrition in South Africa is an ongoing challenge that directly undermines human potential and social progress. While the South African Constitution guarantees everyone’s right in South Africa to food, a recent national survey undertaken by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) revealed that 63.5% of South African households face food insecurity. These results were launched by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development on 10 October 2024.

Environmental Planning and Sustainability Branch & our topic is the City’s Experiential Education Garden at the Green Point Urban Park , an exciting feature at the EEG is the
Khoi education programme & exhibition . The first phase of the EEG project was launched in December 2020 and during the current phase more elements, such as the dome structured classroom, is being added.
The dome’s design references the dwellings of the Khoi and pays tribute to their heritage as a First Nations group. The proposed exhibition displays and educational programmes will further relay their history. These components will also link to the current Khoe structures and information in the biodiversity showcase garden in the Green Point Park.

As the globe collectively celebrates World Food Day today, we want to ponder on the effects of sugar on the body. Titled "Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?", the fourth episode of the Healthy Living Alliance’s (HEALA) web series, Chew on This, is now available and in this new segment, they critically examine the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary beverages, introduced to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. The panel of experts explores whether the sugar industry has been truthful about its claims concerning the levy’s impact on jobs and the economy, while urging viewers to consider the levy’s health benefits, particularly for vulnerable communities affected by obesity and diabetes. Zukiswa Zimela, Communications Manager at HEALA joins us on the line now for more.
