Recent months have seen several reports about the bogus qualifications of prominent figures and allegations of sexual abuse and grooming at some schools. It goes without saying the importance of screening teachers thoroughly to ensure that statutory requirements are met, teachers don’t have a criminal record and that schools stay the haven they’re intended to be.TPN’s data reveals that more than 3.3% of school employees, including teachers, sports coaches, administrators, and grounds staff have a criminal record for offenses ranging from convictions for murder, rape, abduction, theft, robbery, fraud, assault, drugs, housebreaking, and serious road infringements. More than half do not declare these convictions.Ashleigh Laurent, Legal Counsel at TPN Credit Bureau joins us on the line for more on why screening school staff is non-negotiable

The concept originated in 2019 from a donated digital camera by Dan Dougan (project member). This sparked a discussion of a photographic project in Salt River. The idea grew into documenting our life and traditions during Ramadaan. We realised that a younger generation were still upholding the traditions of their grandparents but, certain parts of Salt River through gentrification were losing these traditions as old SR families were being forced out and new residents moved in. We saw the value in capturing the daily life of a young generation during Ramadaan so they may come to feel proud about upholding these traditions.

The lack of electricity at the local police station in Ga-Rankuwa has given rise to concerns about crime.Eyewitness News visited the community, north of Pretoria, where residents said the police station locked its gate at night due to the lack of electricity, reportedly caused by cable faults and the removal of a circuit breaker. It's understood officers created a makeshift office at the security quarters to only certify documents, using flashlights on their cellphones. Residents there described it as a busy and functional station during the day but labelled it useless and unproductive at sunset. Alpha Ramushwana, EWN reporter updates us further now
