As we near the end of Abraham’s life, we finally meet his promised son, Isaac. But the story of his birth is sandwiched between the repeated sins of his parents, as if to insist that God blesses us by his grace, in spite of our faithfulness, most of all in the free gift of his son, Jesus Christ.

Today we continue our teaching series in Genesis. We’ve heard God make great promises to Abraham, and seen God show great mercy to Abraham and his family through all their stuff ups. But this focus on God’s mercy raises the question: Doesn’t God also care about justice? What about the victims of injustice? How can God show mercy like he has to Abraham’s family while also dealing with injustice like he should? As Jeremy takes us through the story of Sodom & Gomorrah, we’ll see the tension between God’s mercy & God’s justice, and ask the question: How should WE relate to God’s justice & mercy ourselves?

We continue in Genesis with a voice and a promise. God calls Abram an old man with no children and nothing special about him. God calls him to leave everything familiar behind: his country, his people, his father’s household. In return, God offers nothing tangible, just a promise: I will bless you, and through you, I will bless the whole world. Abram goes. But Genesis 12 doesn’t let us romanticize that obedience as before the chapter ends, Abram’s faith wavers under pressure in Egypt. This week we open our new series tracing the story of Abraham, and ask what faith looks like.

Our culture is often filled with many divisions and a blindness that fails to our neighbours who are made in God’s image and the work of God Himself in the person of Jesus. In today’s story we will see how the hard hearts of those who should be the most ready to see Jesus causes blindness and how the faith of one woman reveals the heart of God who invites all to his table.
