Series: Notable lessons from Women in the Bible

This week we learn powerful lessons about prioritising, defying norms and taking upon ourselves only what will help advance us. We learn these lessons from Martha's sister, Mary. Instead of fulfilling "womanly roles" by providing hospitality to their guests, Mary chose to sit at the feet of Jesus, to listen and learn from Him. In a turn of events, following Martha's complaint, Jesus puts a stamp of approval on Mary's actions, teaching Martha and us of the power to sift through many of life's events by taking on only what matters.

The second greatest commandment is to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. The Bible tells us to love our enemies and return good with evil. This can be quite tricky for us when we are on a solo-journey of loving. In this week's message, I look at Luke 6 verse 35 where we are commanded to "love our enemies and do good to them without expecting nothing back".

I am personally challenged by this scripture but with the new found understanding, I am certain that I will continue to improve on loving everyone unconditionally, especially those people in my life that I find difficult to love.

As inhabitants on this earth, our character is always tested. As Christ's children, how we respond to these tests differentiates us from everyone else. Luke 6:36 challenges us to show mercy to others, just as God shows mercy to us. This is a great challenge indeed, which we can't conquer alone but only with God's guidance and help.

True freedom comes from God. For us to experience this freedom, we need to repent of our sins. Because of His great love and mercy, God will always forgive us for all that we have done. Psalm 51: 1-2 reminds us of how merciful He is, and because of this mercy, He will wipe away all our sins and wash away all our evil. If you want to get loose from the shackles that have you bound, and to experience His freedom, come to Him, just as you are!

Laying it all bare by confessing that Jesus is our Lord and saviour is a powerful act we have to undertake. The power resides in the fact that through confession of His Lordship and of our iniquities, we are able to live in and experience the abundance of His love for us. A love that is pure and unconditional. A love that carries us through all of life’s hurdles and walks us into a life that He has promised us.
