The town of Villanueva de la Vera has always had a fervent religious vocation, proof of which is the large number of brotherhoods listed in documents from the end of the 18th century, which also detailed their assets, including whether they had their own chapel.

Built in the 16th century, it has been declared a Monument of Cultural Interest. It is located in the Plaza del Cementerio, and its walls are built with granite masonry reinforced with ashlars in the corners and exterior buttresses.

José García Mora, better known as "El Cura Mora", was one of the most influential people in the north of Extremadura during the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. He did part of his studies in his hometown, Plasencia, where he studied Latin, Humanities and Philosophy, but it was in Valladolid and Salamanca where he obtained his doctorates in Sacred Theology and Canon Law.

The popular architecture of Villanueva, like that of the rest of the villages of La Vera, is characterised by the timber frame construction system, which was carried out by carpenters for the upper floors, as the first floor was built in ashlar or masonry to insulate it from the dampness of the ground.

On the corner of Calle Chorrillo is the oldest house in the village. In the past there was a small fountain below the Chorrillo fountain which was used as a washing place so that the main fountain would not fill with soap and so that the animals could drink without any inconvenience.

This square is a clear example of Verata's popular architecture, pentagonal and porticoed.

The population originated during the period of repopulation that began at the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, when four villages were formed: Mesa, Curuela, Salobral and San Antón.

José García Mora, más conocido como “El Cura Mora” fue una de las personas más influyentes en el norte de Extremadura durante la segunda mitad el siglo XIX y primeros años del XX. Realizó parte de sus estudios en su ciudad natal, Plasencia, en cuyo seminario concilió los estudios de Latín, Humanidades y Filosofía, pero fue en Valladolid y en Salamanca donde adquirió los títulos de Doctor en Sagrada Teología y en Derecho Canónico.

El mejor lugar para comenzar tu andadura por Villanueva de la Vera es la casa azul, que es la Oficina de Turismo de Villanueva de la Vera y alberga el centro de interpretación del PeroPalo una fiesta declarada de interés turístico regional. Además, recoge un museo a la cultura tradicional de Villanueva.
