Until the spring of 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention argued that Title 42 was needed to contain the coronavirus. But in April 2022, the agency said there was no public health basis to continue expelling migrants and announced the policy's termination.

The administration couldn't end Title 42 last year due to an order from a federal judge in Louisiana who agreed to a request from Republican-led states to block the policy's termination on technical grounds. The expulsions were again set to end in December 2022 after another federal judge declared the rule illegal. But his ruling was later paused by the U.S. Supreme Court, again at the request of Republican-led states.

Title 42 ended at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Thursday because the national COVID-19 public health emergency is expiring, eliminating one of the legal underpinnings of the policy.

The NC House just passed a 12-week abortion ban and if it passes the NC Senate, Gov. Cooper will likely veto the bill. Reuters reports:

North Carolina's Republican-dominated House on Wednesday passed and sent to the state Senate a controversial bill limiting most abortions to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a sharp drop from the state's current limit of 20 weeks' gestation.

The bill passed 71-46 along party lines, with one Republican and two Democratic lawmakers not voting.

If the state Senate passes the bill on Thursday as expected, Democratic Governor Roy Cooper will almost certainly veto it. But Republicans have a supermajority in the House, thanks to a formerly Democratic lawmaker who switched parties in April, and can override Cooper's veto if the lone Republican who abstained from Wednesday's vote supports it.

The recent alleged assassination attempt on Vladimir Putin has many asking if it's real or just a false flag by Russia. Putin suggests that Ukraine is responsible for the attack. Reuters has more:

Russia accused Ukraine on Wednesday of attacking the Kremlin with drones overnight in a failed attempt to kill President Vladimir Putin.

A senior Ukrainian presidential official denied the accusation - the most serious that Moscow has levelled at Kyiv in more than 14 months of war - and said it indicated Moscow was preparing a major "terrorist provocation".

The Kremlin said Russia reserved the right to retaliate, and hardliners demanded swift retribution against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

"Two unmanned aerial vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin. As a result of timely actions taken by the military and special services with the use of radar warfare systems, the devices were put out of action," the Kremlin said in a statement.

Vince discusses how the new North Carolina Voter I.D. law could affect 2024 elections. The News and Observer reports:

With the new North Carolina Supreme Court decision that came Friday about using voter ID for elections, there could be changes ahead for voters in the 2024 presidential election. Challengers failed to prove lawmakers discriminated by passing the voter ID law, the court said in a decision on Holmes v. Moore. The now majority-Republican Supreme Court reversed the December decision made by the previous court that was majority Democrats. So what does this actually mean for voters? “The most basic level, it means you’re gonna need an ID to vote in 2024,” Western Carolina University political science professor Chris Cooper told The News & Observer on Friday.
