Faith and belief are often tied to one another in the Bible, but sadly, all too often, to hear that preached about, it is suggested that if you have fear then somehow you don’t have faith. The Bible makes it clear that fear interrupts our sense of trust and confidence in God, thus hampering faith, but not preventing it. In today’s message we see the life of Abram how fear and faith play against one another and how God grows us through the tensions of the two.

God loves to use ordinary people to do the extraordinary; even people like you.

If you and I begin in the New Testament reading about Abraham the Father of faith we might get the wrong impression, that Abrahama just believed God and that was the end of it. But those summary statements in the New Testament assume that we know the Old Testament story of how Abram became Abraham, forgetting the process of transformation that moved him from ordinary to extraordinary. The same process that you and I need to be people of faith.

Most people speak of peace as something deep within, a feeling, or freedom from chaos and pain, but is that peace? Or is it just emotions and circumstances? Real peace is the power to overcome both the circumstances and the feelings that drive us into chaos. Real peace is the internal compass that helps us navigate how to respond or react. If the gospel is peace, then it is the Holy Spirit that empowers us to overcome rather than to be overcome. Would that be good news to you?
