I. The Prodigal | Luke 15:11‐32
The flight
The younger son wishes his father dead.

The younger son denies his relationship and ultimately his image of God.

The father loves him enough to let him go.

A far off place
The younger son is looking for the easy way out.

The younger son goes bankrupt...physically, spiritually, emotionally, and

communally.

Ulterior motives
The younger son shows no real remorse for what he has done.

The younger son is looking to barter his way back into life.

II. The Party
An unexpected response
The father shames himself rather than the younger son.

The father forgives the younger son long before his return.

The younger son restored
The love of the father causes the younger son to repent.

The father fully restores the younger son back to his original relationship.

The entire household celebrates the restoration of the son.

III. The Perfectionist
So close, yet so far away
The older son’s animosity paralyzes him.

The older son has never left home yet has never found home.

The older son denies his relationship with the father and brother.

An unexpected response revisited
The father forgives the older son before he knows he needs it.

Both sons are give the chance for restoration.

IV. Conclusion
All are invited into forgiveness, restoration, and ultimately the Kingdom regardless of where they have come from.

In the Kingdom, the forgiven ones become those who forgive.

A. Because you are a new kind of human, some behaviors must be left behind.
B. What is up with God’s boundaries on sexual activity?
1. Staying out of the chaos! | Genesis 1
2. The injunctive is not simply, “Don’t do that!” as much as it is, “Do this!”
3. God’s boundaries are not arbitrary but purposeful.

"The greatest issue facing the world today, with all its heartbreaking needs, is whether those who, by profession or culture, are identified as "Christians" will become disciples - students, apprentices, practitioners - of Jesus Christ, steadily learning from him how to live the life of the Kingdom of the Heavens into every corner of their lives." - Dallas Willard (Renovation of the Church; 120)

I. Issue of Identity
A. Who we are in Christ determines what we do!
B. The new life to be revealed fully on the last day, is to let itself be seen in advance, in this present time, in our Christian behavior!

II. Issue of Intentionality
A. If we are to experience true spiritual formation in Christ, we have to want Christ formed in us.
B. Paul says to kill the things in our lives that are not in line with God’s kingdom.
1. Issues of sex
2. Issues of anger

III. Issue of Sin
A. “Sin begins when the idea of illicit gratification, presented to the mind in temptation, is not at once crushed, but is instead fondled and cherished.” - N. T. Wright (Colossians & Philemon; 139)

A. This treasure chest is made up of Jews and Gentiles. | Deuteronomy 32:8-10
1. What God said to Israel he now says to the Church.
2. The phrase, “The apple of his eye” is another way of saying we are his treasure chest.
B. How can you know you are chosen to be part of God’s treasure?
