The Christian religion has a double-edged history in America. It was used as a tool to keep oppressors in power where slaves were “bound to obey their masters.” In turn slaves used negro spiritual songs and interpretations of the biblical text to aid their freedom. In our  recent history some arguments have been made that the bible still keeps blacks docile and obedient and does not encourage the use of critical thinking but rather forces us to follow the faith blindly.
