Time of comfort, hope, and light on the longest night of this very long year. 

Service of comfort, hope, and light on this, the longest night in this very, very long year. In a more typical year, Christmas is advertised as a season of joy, excitement, and happiness.  And this year, as we weather a pandemic, we are grieving and longing and struggling on multiple levels. Perhaps in no other Christmas season of our lives do the shadows of the night feel as looming and overwhelming.  So welcome to this service of hope and healing on this, the longest night of this very long year. Let us worship God.

Message:  What in Heaven’s Name?

The Love of God-With-Us does not come as a mere feeling or sentimental fluff. Love cannot be imposed from on high. Love is our greatest commandment— tending tenderly to God, to others, and to self. The Love of God-With-Us is love in action, radical love practices: redistribution of resources and risks, solidarity with those most exposed to a threat, hospitality to caravans, refugees, migrants, and sojourners, caring for those we’ve been taught to despise, or fear. This love is fierce and tender. It defies unjust rules and flattens hierarchies of value.

Message:  God Wants to Level You for Christmas

The Peace of God-With-Us does not come as law and order, or enforcement and control. Peace cannot be imposed from on high. Peace cannot be commanded. The Peace of God-With-Us is wild, unpredictable, and life-giving. The Peace of God-With-Us liberates us from deadly complicity. Peace is gestating in darkness and comes unexpectedly. Peace invites our expectations and seeks our participation.

The Hope of God-With-Us does not come as a predetermined plan. Hope cannot be imposed or commanded. The Hope of God-With-Us is courageous, risky, unfolding, indeterminate. The Hope of God-With-Us is collective. Hope liberates us from deadly complacency. Hope invites our expectation, and yearns for our participation.
