On this week’s show we welcome back that perennial pair of regular contributors LISA PARKER and ANDREW TROWBRIDGE from the headquarters of their ROUND THE ARCHIVES podcast, lurking, as they often do, somewhere on the south coast of England.
This week ANDREW suggested the topic of REACTIONS might be something he’d like to talk about on the show, and, given his explosive history as a professional chemist working in the scientific laboratories, my first guess at what he was referring to was to wonder whether we were going to head off into the realms of exploring and observing SCIENCE ON TV again, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
My second guess was to ask whether there had been some huge new series called “REACTIONS’ that had become hugely popular but which had somehow passed me by, but, again, I was not getting any warmer, despite the many flasks of mysterious notions bubbling up all around in my mind.
Because, in recent times, enjoyment of those television programmes we enjoy from yesteryear can take many forms, and LISA and ANDREW both have history in encouraging the creativity of all manner of people when it comes to discovering and exploring the world of archive television, and so ANDREW in particular wanted to draw our attention to the online phenomenon that is REACTION VIDEOS on websites like YOUTUBE where viewers who have never seen a programme or series or just a particular episode post their immediate reactions to these shows whilst watching them, and discuss what they thought of them.
ANDREW has several favourites that he mentions in the next hour – so you might want to jot a few of them down, but there’s a whole universe of them to explore, although I’d like to think you might at least hang around for the rest of this hour before you go off into the latest final frontier and seek any of them out, because we also briefly discuss with LISA our own reactions to finding new series to watch, and whether our own unconscious bias might be tainted by our own baggage when we approach watching anything that is new to us.
