Hello VAPA Community! 

This is Dr. Trimis with your weekly announcements. Please note that over the holiday break there will not be any weekly announcements.  Please note we are on break from December 17 through January 8, 2017.

This week we will have a regular day on Monday, students are dismissed at 3 pm. This Friday, December 16, we will have a reverse minimum day. Students will report to school later than usual. Homeroom/Breakfast in the Classroom will start at 10 am on Friday and students are dismissed at 3 pm.

We have so much to celebrate this week! Congratulations to all of our VAPA students involved in Winterfest: This Generation which featured our visual arts and media arts students on both days, our wonderful instrumental and vocal music performers on Thursday and our dynamic dancers on Friday. Special thanks to all of the families, fans and supporters, to Ms. Holland, Mr. Adolfo, Ms. Kim, Mr. Cuevas, Mr. Sanna Pickett, and Mr. Noriega. Special congratulations also to our Legacy Marching Band and Color Guard which includes flag team and cheer, for great performances in both the South Gate and Huntington Park Parades this weekend! This concludes their Fall season and the group is already making plans for the Spring and next Fall when they will compete in field show competitions.

Any VAPA seniors who would like to participate in a job shadow or internship in the arts as well as participate in a senior recital, there are sign-up forms in the VAPA office. Please complete one this week.

Please check our website or important information and events. When we return after the break, we will have auditions for our new Color Guard which will meet after school and compete in Spring competitions, our competitive drumline which will also be practicing after school and competing in the Spring, and look out for the dates for auditions for the spring musical, High School Musical.

We will also be starting a new technical theatre program where students will learn all about set, lighting, and sound design, an orchestra program, and mariachi ensemble this Spring. Please see us in the office for more information.

Lastly, parents please look for a parent survey going home this week which needs to be completed and turned as part of our application to become a district-wide magnet school, the Legacy Visual and Performing Arts Magnet High School!

On a personal note, I would like to thank the entire staff and community for making my first semester such an amazing experience. I am looking forward to the future of VAPA with high expectations and excitement.

Hello VAPA Community!

This is Dr. Trimis with your weekly announcements. Monday is a shortened day. Today is December 4. Hola comunidad de VAPA. Este es el Dr. Trimis con sus anuncios semanales. El lunes es un día acortado. Hoy es el 4 de diciembre.

Congratulations to Mr. Goldstein, Mr. Ruiz, and our whole staff for a great DVR review last week. Congrats to Mr. McGrade and the cast and crew of the fall play. They had great performances on Friday and Saturday that were well attended.  The spring musical will be announced on Monday morning and auditions will be the first week of school in January when we get back, if not sooner.

We are in recruitment season. The Zone of Choice window for students and parents to select their school is in February. Please spread the word. Winterfest is this week. Music on Thursday and dance on Friday at 6:30 pm, each preceded by an art showcase at 5 pm. Please join us. Please come out and support our band this weekend when they're performing their first two parades, Huntington Park Parade on Saturday and Southgate Parade on Sunday.

Our glee club and A Cappella singers will be performing at South Gate Park at the Breakfast with Santa event. Already 400 tickets have been sold. We wish them luck and invite anyone with children to come to the event.

Finals week is next week and we are on a special schedule.  A letter is being sent home and there will be announcement of the schedule next week. Students should be caught up on all their work and be studying for finals. Hello VAPA Community. This is Dr. Trimis with your weekly announcements. Today is November 27. Hola comunidad de VAPA. Este es el Dr. Trimis con sus anuncios semanales. Este lunes es un día acortado. Hoy es el 27 de noviembre. I hope your break this week was restful. As we move forward into the last few weeks of 2017, as usual we have lots going on at VAPA. This week we have our Fall Play on Friday and Saturday and next week Winter Fest on December 8th and 9th. As we come to the end of the semester, this is a good time for all students to be sure they are caught up on homework and other assignments. We are doing our best to ensure all of our students pass their classes a C or better. Special Thanksgiving Message

11-24-16

 

Hello VAPA Community.  This is Dr. Trimis with a quick message.  Hola comunidad de VAPA. Este es el Dr. Trimis con un mensaje rápido.

Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables. Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have. Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns on or around Thanksgiving Day. Some parades or festivities also mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season. Some people have a four-day weekend so it is a popular time for trips and to visit family and friends.

This has been a very positive Fall, though challenging, as we move into Winter and look forward to 2017. On behalf of Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School, the Legacy High School Complex, and LAUSD, I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. Please enjoy the day with family and friends.

Hello VAPA Community,

This is Dr. Trimis with your weekly announcements. Please note SCHOOL IS IN SESSION on Monday and we have a shortened day. 

Este es el Dr. Trimis con sus anuncios semanales. Tenga en cuenta que LA ESCUELA ESTÁ EN SESIÓN el lunes y tenemos un día acortado.

Please also refer to my phone call from yesterday as a reminder all students are expected to remain at school for the entire day (2 pm). To support our students, we will help facilitate a discussion at lunchtime in the quad for students.

This week is another busy week with a PTSA meeting at 3:30 pm on Tuesday followed by a Community Magnet Information Meeting at 5 pm and Coffee With the Principal on Friday at 8:30 am followed by another Community Magnet Information Meeting. Thursday Evening we will have our annual Student/Faculty Talent Show in the MPR at 6 pm.

Special Message

Nov. 12, 2016

Hello VAPA Community. This is Dr. Trimis, Principal of Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School, with an important message. Emotions are running high at schools across the District in response to the results of the presidential election.Thursday, a number of our students gathered together and walked-off campus. The safety of all students and staff remains our highest priority and all walkouts were closely monitored by our staff and the Los Angeles School Police Department.   

We teach our students that they have a right to freedom of speech. They are also allowed to participate in peaceful demonstrations on campus during non-instructional times, within parameters set by administrators. They are not permitted to leave school, and any students who do so, may face disciplinary action.   Please talk to your child about these sensitive issues and please encourage them not to leave campus.

This is a critical time for our school, for our district, city, and nation. This is a time when we absolutely must support each other, even if through the seemingly tumultuous political landscape we appear to be working through. This is not the time for students to walk out of school, but stay in school for the support we can give each other. This is a time when we return to our core beliefs, what holds us together as a school and as a community. Legacy VAPA is a student-centered creative learning community that engages students intellectually and artistically, instilling responsible citizenship and academic rigor for college and career preparedness. VAPA is a place where all students are safe in a loving a supportive environment. At VAPA our diversity is our strength. At VAPA we will ensure students prepared for college, career, and life, through the arts. At VAPA academics matter, the arts matter, and, most importantly, people matter. Our counselors, administrators, and teachers are available to counsel students, talk with students, and provide support for students in every way we can. Thank you and see you at school.

Vetrans Day, 2016

11/11/16

 

Dear VAPA Community,

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, a holiday commemorating the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. All too soon, it became clear that this had not been the "War to End All Wars" as some optimists claimed. After a second global conflict that dwarfed the first in its magnitude of destruction, countries around the world began changing their observance to encompass all conflicts and honor those who served. Our own Veterans Day was established as a national holiday by congressional resolution and presidential proclamation in 1954.

Today, nearly 2 million veterans live in California. Among them are men and women who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and our recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as various smaller engagements and peacetime deployments. As we remember these brave Americans today, we should consider not only their valor and suffering in the service of our country, but also the challenges they face upon returning home. Our veterans suffer from high rates of disability, poverty, unemployment and homelessness. We cannot glibly claim to honor our heroes while leaving them to suffer from social and economic ills.

This Veterans Day, let us welcome all returning veterans with open arms and, as President Eisenhower wrote in his 1954 proclamation, "Let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts will not have been in vain."

We also take today to thank all of our active military. We thank you for your service, your dedication to our great nation, and wish you safe returns.

Fall sports teams who have concluded their regular seasons. We now move on to

This week we will have our Senior Open Mic event on Thursday at 6 pm in the Quad.

Come out and support our

Girls Volleyball Team, Tuesday night at 7 pm at Legacy when they play Marshall

High School in the play-off series! We wish our Cross Country Team the best in

City Finals this Wednesday afternoon.

 

A reminder to all our team

sports, team photos will be taken this week for all teams including cheer,

flags, band, and dance team. More information is at www.legacytiger.com and on

our website.

 

Please note the district

guidelines for Halloween Costumes should students choose to wear a costume to

school tomorrow.   Halloween is October

31.

1. One of the most important

mandates is that costumes shall not be demeaning to any person or group based

on age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity (boys as girls and vice

versa), nationality, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or to any

individual staff or student at the school.

2. There may be no clown

costumes.

Costumes may not cause a

significant disruption or distraction to the school program such as revealing

costumes (e.g., low cut, French maids, nightwear, and bathing suits).

3. No costume can be worn

that is unsafe or that may create a safety hazard.

4. No weapons or replica

weapons are to be brought to school.

5. No masks are allowed that

completely hide the identity of the student; however, masks may be worn during

a parade or other specific activity, provided that safety is not hindered, as

determined by the site administrator.

6. No costumes are allowed

that would impair a student’s vision or movement (e.g., ability to climb

stairs).

From the Desk of Dr. T

Edward A. Trimis, EdD.

I often think about my friend, retired LAUSD principal, Dr. Randall V. Delling, who has the claim many can't make, a streak straight A's like no other. Dr. Delling managed to, somehow, get an "A" from every teacher, in every class, fromKindergarten through middle school through high school graduation. That's K-12.But it did not stop there. Dr. Delling went on to get his Bachelors Degree, Masters degree, teaching credential, administrative credential, and doctorate. And, guess what? "A's" throughout! I asked him once how did he do it? What was his secret? He said that he always worked hard, but there was more to it than that. If he didn't understand something, he asked for help. He talked with his parents and his teachers regularly to be sure he was doing everything he was supposed to and was on track. He kept all of his papers and all of his tests. If a teacher tried to give him less than an "A", he would break out all of his A-graded quizzes, tests, and homework, and the teacher would have to change the grade.Maybe not something everyone can accomplish, but a smart approach to school success. Work hard. Communicate with your teachers and family. Ask for help.Keep all your work. Question a grade you are not happy with.

While it may seem that there is plenty of time between now and Winter Break, there actually is very little. It is critical all students stay on top of their homework and meet with their teachers to make sure they are clear of all course expectations. Because we lose a week of instruction due to Fall Break, another day for Veteran’s Day, and we have finals the last week, we are, in really left with only a few weeks of instruction between now and December 15. We have about4 weeks until Fall Break and then 2 weeks after that until finals. On our block schedule, this equates to about 18 class sessions left for most classes. Don't waste a minute!
