Un día en el mes de Nisan, conocí a Ferris Efendi Karamy, un viejo amigo de mi padre. Un  hombre cuya riqueza lo hizo amable, y cuya bondad lo hizo rico. Uno de esos raros hombres que vienen a este mundo y se van de él sin hacer daño a nadie, pero las personas de esa clase generalmente sufren mucho, y son víctimas de la opresión, porque no son lo suficientemente hábiles para salvarse de la maldad de los demás. 
Farris Efendi tiene una hija, cuya belleza y gentileza están más allá de toda descripción; y también ella sufrirá mucho, porque la riqueza de su padre ya la está colocando al borde un horrible precipicio...
